Education Ministry to push for coding as third language for Thai students

July 27, 2019 - Thailand’s Ministry of Education will push for the inclusion of a third ‘language’, coding (computer programming language), in the curricula of Thai students, from kindergarten level if possible, said Deputy Education Minister Kalaya Sophonpanich on Friday.

Responding to the proposal to teach coding at schools, from Future Forward MP Kulthida Roongruangkiat during the debate on government’s policy statement, Khunying Kalaya said that it was her wish, since the election campaigning early this year, that Thai students should learn a third language, coding, in addition to English and their native language.

As a science student herself, the deputy education minister promised that she would push for the inclusion of coding in the curricula of the Thai educational system as quickly as possible, pointing to the increasing role of technology in in everyday life.

Coding is basically the language used to develop applications, websites and software. Without it, we would have none of the major technologies we have come to rely on, such as operating systems, our smart phones, the browser we choose to view our favorable blogs or even the blogs themselves. It all runs on code.

PS: Thai Education Minister (He) & Deputy (She), both are pushing coding....meanwhile in Malaysia both are pushing for Jawi.

PUTRAJAYA: Exposing students to coding programmes in schools will ensure Malaysia is on the right track towards becoming a digital economy nation.

In line with this, Deputy Education Minister II Senator Chong Sin Woon said it was important for the younger generation to get ready and equip themselves with the knowledge of coding.

The Education Ministry and Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) have worked together to introduce Computer Science syllabus, including for Coding programmes under the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) subjects this year, he said.

"The government knows that this is the future and is encouraging students to equip students with the right knowledge for the future," he told reporters after attending the Hour of Code (HOC) campaign in Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Putrajaya 14 (1) today.

In efforts to increase awareness of the importance of computer science subjects and computational thinking skills for students, Chong said the ministry and MDEC had joined hands to organise a nationwide HOC campaign.

The campaign which started on Oct 30 saw the participation of some 90,000 students from some 1,000 primary and secondary schools throughout the country, he said.

The campaign which ended today was implemented in schools for two weeks after final examination before year-end school holidays.

Chong said hopefully from next year the programme would be organised more frequently, not just before school holidays.

"The HOC campaign is beneficial in helping students understand the basic foundation of technology. This is another initiative under the national #mydigitalmaker movement to expose students to coding, which is one of the basic skills for future jobs.

"This initiative is also in line with the government's aspiration to fortify Computer Science subjects within formal curriculum as tabled by the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak in the recent Budget 2018 announcement," he said.

Last month, the premier had announced that an allocation of RM250 million for future education of the National Transformation 2050 (TN50) generation, STEM centres and for the improvement of Computer Science modules, including Coding programmes.

From the RM250 million, RM190 million was allocated for two thousand classes to be transformed into Smart Classrooms for 21st Century learning to increase creative and innovative learning.

MDEC Talent and Digital Entrepreneurship vice president Sumitra Nair said Malaysia also stood at the second place outside United States of America, beating Canada in organising the most events under HOC.

"The response has been overwhelming and we hope it will continue to gain exposure on the importance of coding programme among students and their parents as well," he added.

That is why it is written 'language'

In English writing, quotation marks or inverted commas, also known informally as quotes, talking marks,[1][2] speech marks,[3] quote marks, quotemarks or speechmarks, are punctuation marks placed on either side of a word or phrase in order to identify it as a quotation, direct speech or a literal title or name. They are also used to indicate that the meaning of the word or phrase they surround should be taken to be different from (or, at least, a modification of) that typically associated with it (e.g. in the sentence the elite, composed by people of mixed ancestry, embraced their "whiteness" – the quotation marks modify the word whiteness to pertain to European culture rather than the colour white); in this way, they are often used to express irony. They also sometimes appear to be used as a means of adding emphasis, although this usage is usually considered incorrect.[4][5]

They also sometimes appear to be used as a means of adding emphasis, although this usage is usually considered incorrect.[4][5]

inb4 don't easily confuse computer studies with programming language

All upper primary students in S’pore to learn coding from 2020

With the rise of digital economy, coding has become a language that young Singaporeans will have to master.

Coding becomes compulsory for upper primary school students
At the Ministry’s workplan seminar 2019 held on July 10, Minister for Communications and Information, S Iswaran, announced that a 10-hour enrichment programme will be piloted at selected schools for the Primary Six students after their Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE).

This programme called Code For Fun (CFF) is conducted by the Ministry of Education and Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) and will be introduced to all primary schools by 2020.

CFF aims to expose young Singaporeans core computational and coding concepts through simple visual programming-based lessons.

This is part of the government’s effort to ensure an inclusive digital society and the CFF will help to cultivate local talents for the emerging digital economy.

Earlier in 2014, the CFF was launched as an optional programme for 93,000 students.

The CFF programme will also be continued at the secondary school level to complement the current computing subjects at O Level (elective) and A Level.

Education Ministry to push for coding as third language for Thai students

Thailand’s Ministry of Education will push for the inclusion of a third ‘language’, coding (computer programming language), in the curricula of Thai students, from kindergarten level if possible, said Deputy Education Minister Kalaya Sophonpanich on Friday.

Are you comparing a 5 year program of computer learning and programming to 6 page of bahasa melayu textbook?
of standard 4?

Nah, I cant take you seriously now.
same old answer later.

now 6 page,
later compulsory spm.

even saying that can feel neuron already dying.

And dont compare psudo-code with programming language.

y u easily confuse again, instead of secondary school learn learn logic primary school also can mah
thn there r npl / inform 7 / other high level language tat is used to teach primary school students n help them translate n grabs coding

thn there r also code snippet tools tat help kids to understand coding & coding also

it doesn't nid 2 be complicated, but to build the fundamentals, which then fundamentals can be reduced during secondary school

don't live inside the well ok
