Me also thinking to upgrade to 16GB
*
Actually according to official specs, Thinkbook 13s can only upgrade to 16GB RAM. Just to let everyone know. Hope to see someone test a 32GB RAM stick though.

Yours is the T13s? you know it can upgrade to 32GB single slot RAM. Buy from US is Rm400 cheaper, maybe can try Taobao or aliexpress too.

Is it worth to put 16gb only a 13s?
*
QUOTE(Benefon @ Oct 29 2019, 09:33 PM)
This depend how you use the laptop.
16gb for general use should be good enough
*
QUOTE(G_KeN @ Oct 29 2019, 09:39 PM)
more than enough lor. dont think u will do any hardcore apps that require very high ram usage on thinkbook specs. mostly chrome tabs lol.

Worth or not worth will depend on individual bro... Not everyone got the T13S for rm1010.  laugh.gif

Normally RAM come in handy for those programs that require lots of cache data like databases, video editing, large spreadsheets, lots of chrome tabs, large PDF smooth scrolling, so undeniable that more RAM is always better. Don't kid yourself. The only decision you need to make is whether can afford or not, if cannot, then just go with what you can afford.

As malays say, "Ukur baju di badan sendiri".

if u require a laptop can handle of the said tasks easily, then u should have gone for something better than thinkbook 13s in the first place. U can have lots of rams but u will always be bottlenecked by the mobile processor and gpu inside the 13s.

thinkbook 13s specs is good for your everyday works like web browsing, microsoft office apps, very very light video/photo editing. in this case, 16gb is more than enough.
*
Exactly! According to official psref, 16gb is max for thinkbook 13s. No harm go for max RAM is my point. Is just matter you can afford or not.

When most your life you use 4GB, you will be happy with 4GB, once you upgrade to 8GB, you cannot downgrade cause you will be happier with 8GB, and the cycle continues to 16GB, 32GB.

Same concept apply to work, house, car. Normally you will upgrade, seldom people downgrade.

Yeap hopfeully can. Seriously people say RAM not important never do basic stuff like opening 100 tabs in chrome before. Then say your big RAM is bottleneck by slow processor. It's intel i5 yo, not intel pentium from 1995. Even Intel themselve say their processor max can 64GB (assuming 2 slot) but they pretend to know better than Intel themselves.

On my Dell 8gb seems enough because of graphic card but on a thinkbook with internal card I dont have experience.
*
Can you elaborate more here.

I don't think GPU compensated for low RAM. GPU mostly for smoother gameplay and high framerate (less lag in games).

Whereas standard RAM is just temporary fast storage for the PC to access instantly when it needs.

How does having graphics card compensate for low RAM in non-game related processes?

Discrete GPU have their own VRAM, thus sparing all the RAM to the system.

Integrated GPU or APU relies on the system RAM, thus eating into the amount of RAM left for your system and works.
*
I am referring to non-game, non-graphic intensity processes here. I do agree GPU comes in handy for those operations.

Edit: Earlier post mention 8gb is enough for him cause of graphic card. Just wondering what he meant by that. Does GPU compensate for RAM for non-gaming related activities?

eGPU > all.
U can upgrade anytime u want.

Usually such as MX250 2gb good than enough for general purpose, I mean not include for games , just use for editing something else.
*
Normally how to know if the thinkpad can use eGPU?

Is it just have thunderbolt 3 port enough?

But laptop is always about compromising.
Battery life, weight etc.

The more ram you have, the higher than battery consumption.  Same goes to hdd ssd etc.

The more powerful cpu you have, the high battery consumption too.

Actually this is not true, don’t think RAM affect battery life. I could be wrong but this is first time I am hearing this.

CPU yes but also depends, now CPU’s becoming smaller and energy saving. Also, smaller the more energy saving it is, that’s why a lot people waiting 7nm offerings.

It is true. You never heard of it because people that do that doesnt care. But it is highlighted in mobile phone.

Didn’t know that, before this I always thought that 4gb ram consume same energy as 8gb or 16gb ram.

Have to really see a percentage breakdown as the word more here can mean anything like maybe 1% more power. In those cases, it would be negligible.

If you go Reddit thinkpad, and search gaming laptop, some people actually say their old thinkpad with graphics card perform better than their newer gaming laptop.

Not only performance but also stuff like internet speed too which can affect gameplay for online games, they report better WiFi speeds compared to their “newer” gaming laptop.

It seems to come with dead battery you need to plug in to use at first time unlike my past experience with (msi gaming laptop). Of cause you need to setup Windows all over again. Later I will try see if my dead laptop's ram etc can be use here.
*
QUOTE(Benefon @ Oct 30 2019, 02:28 PM)
Actually that’s not a dead battery.
There is a secured function to avoid shipping cause fire.
Just plug in and power on will work.
*
Yeap that’s not dead battery. It’s done on purpose for safety. Watch any unboxing video related to Lenovo/thinkpad laptops on YouTube and all come with 0% battery. Just have to plug it in and this laptop got fast charging. 1 hour charge 80% battery life.
