I've been eyeing up Barbatos as my second try at GunPla (first one was a HG RedComet - nothing special done)
my friend suggested I take on the MG Barbatos, but then googling around says some of the Barbatos models are subpar? (also, i swear there was price increase before this. i thought all HGs were like 50-60, suddenly all 100++)

Does anyone have experience with any of the Barbatos? Or any recommendation for fun builds? Not looking for a "main character" type gundam, just something cool looking

1 - MG Barbatos is quite a solid kit. If you want cool looking kit, this is hard to recommend as looks are subjective
2 - Yes, prices have increased for HG kits because of better parts separations and quality + our weakening RM currency

Damn. I guess i should have bought it early then. I heard some of the Barbatos variants have shitty frames? I saw one or two reviews on some of them?

Ok. Boight a MG Barbatos plus some clippers because I used like.. rusted dull ones before. We'll see how it goes.

I found a vid that basically took a look at the diff Barbatos models. They mentioned that some of the HG barbatos variants got flimsy joints or not balanced properly. Ah well. Hope the MG one is good

Sifus, regarding panel lining, can you use a marker from like Popular? I forgot to order one, but i saw online you can use mechanical pencils? Or even markers that are not for panel lining?
Do you panel line before or after assembly?

pencil line will be too soft to even see. Suggest you get a proper gunpla marker ( 0.2mm) or just buy the tamiya accent panel line paint.

I saw Popular gt some markers at 0.1 size. Do those work? Does the usual stationary knife work for cutting nubs?

Anyone familiar with nu gundam builds? Mainly the 1/100 vs the 1/144 ver ka.
Watch some Geika kotsu (?) and he sorta mentioned the 144 one is sorta pushed very much to the limit? And some models by the same designer have trouble standing without supoort?

Yes, i have both MG 1/100 and RG 1/144. MG is crap. RG is better in terms of stability.
*
Damn it. I prefer 1/100 personally. How difficult is the 1/144 to put together? I saw one on shopee a steel coated bullet?

Edit: Also, is the 1/100 one the only one with the psychoframe effect?

The verka is not too bad lah...only the funnel is a bit fiddly but it can be fixed by using wires on the connection points between funnels ...that way it will be much sturdier
*
What do you mean? sorry, so far i've only heard that it's unstable? What's this about the funnels?

QUOTE(matsheikh @ Feb 12 2021, 03:58 PM)
Easy solution, just buy both.

The funnels are known to drop off the joints.. or they'll warp as the connection joints are small pegs... I think other than that, it's a pretty handsome looking kit.. but it's a pretty big kit therefore posability can be a bit limited but on a stand it's pretty good..

here's my older build...

*
Ah.. i see. does it come with the stands to have the funnels like.. in attack mode?

hey guys, my friend got me a unipin fine line marker pen. It's 01 (? but on the pen it's also written 0.1).
Can i use that as a panel liner?

Also, does anyone know any models that kinda look uh... heavily armored? How to say ah.. you guys know like, the armoring kinda like wh40k space marine armor? Very intimidating looking? Rather than sleek?

Or are there any models that look like knight armor? like plate armor?

depends on the scale that you're working with... some panel lines are very fine while some are thick. Also as someone who have attempted to panel line with these pens, they tend to fade. You'll need to seal them up with top coat. For the concept or look that you're going for, do you have a pic?

btw, just finished building this awesome kit. Gonna start customizing soon !

im working on a HG 1/144 Zaku II and a 1/100 Barbatos. I guess having it fade would be useful.. considering that Im still learning..

I was thinking something like this? (I know there's a primaris marine figure)
user posted image

The best way I can describe it is if Barbatos is the tall lean and fast guy, the mech design im looking for is the one that is swole and will annihilate ya with a punch. Or maybe a gundam with an impressive sword and shield/weapon

Any thoughts regarding Sazabi MG and RG? The MG seems a lot more affordable, but im curious about the quality.

Also, why is there such huge price variation? I see some selling the MG for 170, some sell 300

170? Need to check if it's scam or bootleg (daban etc)... Personally I prefer the MG as I found the details nicer with the psychoframe...

here's my version  biggrin.gif

Ah! That's the one! So this daban is bootleg... I see. That explains quite a bit.
But ooof. RM360 is a very painful purchase.

I know where you are coming from..... lot of newbies to this hobby buy the cheaper bootleg only later to realise and regret that rm 360 is well worth it after assembling the pirate version lol...

1) sticker wont stick
2) uneven parts
3 ) peg holes sometimes very hard to go in
4 ) no warranty... any problem with your kits...good luck. At least with the original ones you can pass back to the dealer and they will pass it back to the distributor
5) plastic finishing diff quality
*
I kinda feel that if I'm putting in RM360 in, I gotta go all out with it. In that, I gotta get water slide sticker, panel lining, polishing etc. that's kinda why I wanna improve first, before i try one

The MG Jesta looks kinda cool.
But what does this mean?
"Model House Coated Steel Bullets"
Does it mean it's different or bootleg or?

Would this model be a good one to experiment with customization? Or would you guys recommend a cheaper model to mess around with.

I mean things like sanding, painting over plastic cuts etc. Maybe a bit of weathering to give it a nice look etc

"Model House Coated Steel Bullets" happens to be some janky translation of Mobile Suit Gundam. "钢弹" from 机动战士钢弹 literally mean steel bomb/bullet.

Ah i see! So safe to buy then!

Any tips/guide for weathering as well as matte coating?
Is there anyway for me to reverse/remove the extra "customization" that I do on the model?

I'm quite new to GunPla, just started and so far I've only done
- 1 Red Zaku HG
- 1 Barbatos MG

Both didn't panel line or use sticker because my fingers too fat to stick them properly. And i'll probably spend hours struggling to fix any mistake I do.

I'll probably pick up the MG Jesta as my next build but I'd like to learn to do matte coating, some custom stickers, MAYBE some paint work and weathering.

So far I have a pair of Nippers (which have oxidised for some reason) as well as a hobby knife (which has also oxidised - probably cause I bought the Popular brand one)

I assume this 0.1 uni pin fine line pen is not good enuf for panel lining.

I have a couple of Q regarding customization/modding
- is it possible to remove the matte coating? I'm worried I decide to change my mind/apply too much/uneven. Is it remove-whenever, or Must-remove-before-it-dries kinda deal?
- how often is sanding required? how do i hide the uggo sand marks
- If I wanna do custom paint job, must it be spray on, or can I use brush?
- How "reversible" is all this customization?

Look in to water decals. It's way more forgiving than stickers. It's easy to work with and will give you plenty of time to shift the decal around as long as the surface is wet. You mean rusted? As for top coats, it's often made to last. Meaning there's no easy way to remove them once they're cured/dried.

You can hand paint, spray can paint or paint with an airbrush. I've tried all of them. Spray cans are very accessible but you'll waste a lot of paint and there's risk of you pooling the surface if you don't know how to control the spray. Hand paint is a pain in the ass for me. It's takes too much effort to get an even coat without any brush strokes. Airbrush requires an initial investment of buying the compressor and the airbrush itself. You'll also need to buy paints suitable for airbrush. Thankfully in malaysia, there's plenty of prethinned paints. All you need to do is just pour the paint in to your airbrush and you're ready.

Everything takes practice to master and some amount of messing up to learn. I suggest you get some Mr.Diy plastic spoons and spray cans. Then try out painting them. Ask away if you have more questions and what route you decided to go with.

Here's me testing out the colors of the paint.

Wow thanks a bunch for the info. A lot to read up. So far, I've ordered a Tallgeese. But i don't really see any water decals for the Barbatos or this Tallgeese HG.
I think i wanna try doing a matte coat then some weathering first, before I consider going into paint jobs then. Any tips for weathering?
