fake 4K doesn't mean bad, not all filmmakers chose to scan their negatives to 4K back then (before movies were shot digitally) so i guess 2K is good enough, then to upscale to 4K for the 4K blu-ray release is satisfactory. we have to look at the studio's budget too. if a studio willing to spend on a mega title... say the godfather where they know people will rush-out to buy its new 4K blu-ray, then they can re-scan whole movie to 4K or higher.
i noticed most commercial/popcorn flicks don't need 4K for their titles. but most epic/award movies will.... and those are choices the filmmakers (studios) made for each of their movies, just like choices of cameras, aspect ratio, or lenses etc...

and another thing, fake 4K could also meant a downsampled from a higher 6K or 8K, who knows right...
