Hi doing research for a new laptop. Main criteria :

Usage : office work (excel, ppt, word), browsing multiple tabs, streaming, youtube and some light gaming
Budget : RM3k+-
Display : 14 /15 FHD IPS. Havent had a touchscreen laptop b4. Good to have but not a must
Processor : i7 (not sure if can get 8/10 gen)
Ram : Min 8gb with option to upgrade. likely upgrade to 16gb upfront
Storage : 512 ssd if possible. Or else min 256 with option to upgrade
Graphic card : which would be recommended? nvidia or amd radeon?
Weight : Not too fuss as will be at desk mainly. Occasional lugging around. Is +-1.5kg decent?

Looking for a reliable brand with good aftersales support in case have problem.

Came across the 2019 Rescuecom Computer Reliability Report which ranked brands based on computer repair share and reliability. I am leaning towards the Asus, Acer and Lenovo brands but any feedback / recommendation will be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys!

Hi Sifus, I posted few mths ago that i was looking for laptop with the following wishlist:

Usage : office work (excel, ppt, word), browsing multiple tabs, multimedia, youtube and some light gaming
Budget : RM3.5k+-
Display : 14 FHD IPS. Dont need touchscreen
Processor : i7 10 gen
Ram : Min 8gb with slot to upgrade. likely upgrade to 16gb later on
Storage : 512 ssd
Graphic card : NVidia MX250 2GB
Weight : +-1.5kg decent

Narrowed down to 3 options which quite closely meet the above criteria (link attached)

1) Ideapad S540 (14 Intel) - Ideapad S540

2) Dell Vostro 14 5000 (5490) - Dell Vostro

3) Dell Inspiron 14 5000 (5490) - Dell Inspiron

Was looking at the Thinkpad series initially but either the specs were not right or price was too high.

Any thoughts on which of the 3 above would be the better option (spec wise/durability/after service)?

Any idea how much the Ideapad S540 was selling for? Its out of stock now like a lot other models.

Thanks in advance.

Lenovo Ideapad S540-14IWL 81ND006XMJ / YMJ (1 slot RAM, 25W MX250)

FYI i5 and i7 don't have much performance difference in ULVs

Thanks ZM Fong

Any idea how much the Lenovo Ideapad S540-14IWL 81ND006XMJ / YMJ (1 slot RAM, 25W MX250) was selling for? There is no info on the Lenovo website and their customer service couldnt answer me either.

Would you also know if there is a lot difference between the Nvidia MX250 and MX230 ?

Hi Guys - looking at the Ideapad 5 which run the i7-10 gen processors. Understand was recently launched on Lenovo website this year.

Played around with the Lenovo configuration : i7-1065G7, 16GB DDR4, 512GB SSD M2 2280, 14 inch IPS 300nits (non touch), Nvidia MX350....final price about RM3.7k (after discount and includes windows + office)

They also have the 15.6 inch version which is around RM200 extra. Same specs as above but extra hard drive slot (dummy), and 15.6 IPS multi touch panel.

Cant find reviews on the Ideapad 5 (Intel) yet but read few good reviews on the AMD version (Ryzen 4000 series). Still have a preference for Intel though...

What you guys think of the above specs and price? Worthwhile to get touchscreen? - havent had a notebook with touchscreen before

Thanks

Any preferences on weight and battery life?

Choosing model is more important than brand IMO

Ideapad 5 is similar to S540, with a few differences (eg no more upgradeable RAM)

Suggest getting i5 if you plan to get dGPU, CPU performance will not be much different in most cases compared to i7

For the touchscreen it really depends on you. Note that the touchscreen doesn't have pen support

Try to get a good discount (coupon/code like LENXCIMB), RM3.7k for a mid range laptop is a bit expensive IMO

Thanks for feedback ZM Fong

The other option would be the i5-1035G1 Processor (1.00GHz, up to 3.60GHz with Turbo Boost, 4 Cores, 6MB Cache), which will bring down cost by about RM500. Read somewhere the i7-1065G7 is about 20% faster but you think this may be moderated by the dGPU?

The LENXCIMB coupon is better than Lenovo coupon..thanks! Is there an expiry date?

First Hard Drive : Dummy Hard Disk Drive
Second Hard Drive : 512GB Solid State Drive, M.2 2280, PCIe-NVMe, TLC
Display : 15.6" FHD (1920x1080), IPS, Anti-glare, 3.2mm Thickness, 300nits, Multi-touch, Narrow bezel
Graphic Card : NVIDIA GeForce MX350 GDDR5 2GB 64bits
Color : Graphite Grey
Keyboard : Keyboard Backlit Iron Grey English
Camera : 720p HD Camera with Array Microphone

Wireless : Wi-Fi 6 2x2 AX, Bluetooth Version 5.0 or above
Warranty : 1 Year Carry-in
2Y Premium Care with Onsite upgrade from 1Y Depot/CCI

After applying coupon, price is within my budget. Thanks ZM Fong

After reading the previous responses :

1) Wanted to check feedback on the Ideapad Slim 5i and specs above? Not many reviews on this model yet. Read commercial / business notebooks are better but they dont offer the specs i am looking for and cost is higher.

2) Many advise to wait for new models. Since the i7-1065G7 is relatively new release, thinking if i should wait. Any idea new models will be for AMD or Intel?

3) Is 512GB enough SSD? Opted to leave 1st hard drive slot as dummy so i can add on later (i assume its possible).

Will be using it for office work, surfing, movies and light gaming

Thanks
Germ

-take the i5, the i7 doesn't bring any noticeable performance improvements (since it has dGPU)
-in China this model is called 小新15, there are some reviews on it
-there is a Ryzen version in this model, however if you prefer less CPU performance and more GPU performance, my suggestion would be i5+MX350 (25W)
-512GB is enough for many users, of course it depends on your usage

Thanks for the feedback ZM Fong !

I havent used AMD notebooks before but quite good feedback on the new Ryzen...you think they will introduce within next 1-2 mths?

CPU performance wise better than i7? If i compare, can i check which AMD chip and GPU would be comparable to the i7-1065G7 and MX350?

unfortunately I have no idea on the launch date

comparing which CPU? U series or H series?

Vega iGPU will not match MX350 in most cases unless power budget is different

*
Think the Ice Lake Core i7-1065G7 should be compared against the Ryzen 5/7 4000 U-series

What is meant "Vega iGPU will not match MX350 in most cases unless power budget is different"?
