Hello lads and ladies, I am interested in getting a Kindle to start the journey of reading e-books. You guys think I should start off with the basic kindle that costs around RM 380++ or go straight to the Kindle Paperwhite which I found it to be around RM 570++

The storage size doesn't matter to me but what matters is that the basic Kindle is only 167 ppi (Pixels per Inch), whereas the Paperwhite is 300 ppi. I kinda have an issue of physical books where I can stick to reading it but I can spend more time on a tablet, technology ruined me.

Also, I am interested in the Kindle is because of the e-ink display that works under sunlight.

Any e-book readers here? Please share your thoughts.

Trolls stay out, I'll just delete all of your posts on my thread.

Bought the paperwhite 1 month ago, managed to finish 2 books with 2 battery charges. As it uses it's own format, sometimes the conversion from PDF/ePUB will ruin the layout. The dictionary & vocabulary building feature is commendable.
It doesn't feel a burden to bring everywhere, and yes, usable at outdoor. I just throw it inside my bag and start reading when I feel to. smile.gif

Go with 300ppi, it'll look much better. No pixelated feel. What you want to avoid is screen that use e-ink Pearl, this is the one that will have low ppi. Look for e-ink Carta, this is the one with high resolution.

But Kindle are something like iOS, a lot restriction, have to buy book from Amazon, harder to side load book.

There are other e-reader brand like Kobo, Boyue, Onyx, just to name a few. They are more like Android, some even using Android as their OS.

If you want to try first to see if you will invest more with e-book then you can find low price refurbished e-reader in aliexpress.

Another thing that you need to consider is screen size. If you plan solely to use for reading e-book in epub or mobi format then 6" is the best as it will be more portable. If also reading PDF file or manga then minimum is 7.8" screen. If you also want the capability for stylus support then be prepared to pay about RM2000 or more. Brand like Remarkable, Onyx, Sony are the top for e-ink tablet with stylus support.

You know how it feels reading physical book vs reading on tablet/laptop screen?
e-ink is very much similar like reading physical book. Your eyes won't feel fatigue because looking at the bright screen for too long.

Do your eyes feel fatigue because looking at the bright screen for too long? Do you read at night with the room light off?
E-reader eliminate these problems. Of course make sure to get e-reader with backlight if want to read at dark.

It's used anyway but in great condition. Maybe because it's Japan set. Found it on Carousell. You have to browse Carousell every single time, that's what I did. The seller just posted it few minutes, I managed to grab it haha.

I own a Kindle 2019 with 167 ppi. Now that it's come with backlight, I would say it's comparable to the paperwhite. And I prefer it's screen over the paperwhite which is flat.

I used to recommend an iPad mini for reading e books.
But after looking at some e readers the screen is just not comparable to an IPS LCD screen, e readers have literally ink-like display.

I'd say go for the latest version of the Kindle. It comes with built-in front lighting, which used to be the main selling point of the Kindle Paperwhite.

The display isn't as crisp as the Paperwhite, but it's good enough in my opinion. I haven't once looked at my Kindle's display and wished that it was sharper!

I have never used one, so it wouldn't be fair for me to comment. I don't see any reason to purchase an Amazon Fire tablet over any other tablet in the market. I personally prefer using eInk driven ebook readers for reading purposes, and iPads for everything else.

for reading ebook with its eink is superior. comfortable and natural. but you need to convert your book format if it is not in the right format. meanwhile a normal tablet is generally supporting more formats, faster, and able to do more. but you sacrifice the comfort of reading e-ink in exchange to a glare screen. for younger people in their 20s and below, and with good eyesight, this is generally not a problem. but if you eyesight is having issue, e-ink is definitely way more superior than a normal tablet.

so i will say which one is best for you, depends on your financial capabilities and eyesight. though nowadays the cheapest kindle is less than RM400 only so unless one is has very low pay, the cost is generally not a big issue.

if you read lots of books with no pictures, then kindle basic or paperwhite is for you. otherwise, if you usually reads magazines and comics or mangas, then get a tablet. I have both the kindle paperwhite and kindle fire. Initially wanted to sell off the kindle fire but ended up loving it cos recently was very much into reading webtoons. Kindly paperwhite is good for those who reads
long period of time as it doesn't tire the eyes.

For reading text in words, yes, go for Kindle. If you are an avid reader, especially on books, there is no reason not to get one. Paperwhite is a good choice. I bought a used Paperwhite 3 for RM200, a few months back.

Was contemplating this question few months back. Tablet VS eReader.

In the end got myself Samsung Tab A for reading & other purposes. Read using Moon Reader with grey background, night mode, grey blackground & white font. Doesnt seem to tire my eyes.

Plus, using eReader you don't need your hand/fingers to keep the book open. Physically less tiring laugh.gif
