Am looking into buying a new Mac.

I've never bought a Mac before and actually I've never bought any computer before this as always had company issued ThinkPads.

Reason for this is my wife runs a V-Log and YouTube channel and recently moved on to 4K for the detail.

The videos are becoming bigger these days as some are 3-8 minutes long while some are up to 40-50 minutes long.

Previously videos were shot on an iPhone 6S and a GoPro but now will be done using 2 iPhone XRs.

Main editing are the Voice Overs, combining for a split screen and plenty of shortening as well as censoring (to remove the swear words obviously)

Was looking at an iMac or a Macbook Pro but unusure how to go about with the specs.

Anyone can help on this?

personally , i think imac late 2017 is the last batch of imac that is worth-every-penny kind of thing . mine was i7 , 16gb , 27'' with 4k reso . walao really nice and space-savvy .

HDD-wise , there always a room for upgrade incase ure short of storage , or get urself some portable/hdd dock to store your prev vlogs.

imho , the latest version sucks , plus damn expensive .

here i attach some advert from mudah for u to gauge the price for 2017 version

Forgot to add, are there any differences between buying the hardware from Machines and the other retailers?

Also if it is a MacBook Pro would it be cheaper to buy and better to buy it out of Malaysia?

Yes the prices have definitely shot up but since the first MBP has lasted close to 10 years, hoping a new one would last the same.

Not too keen on buying 2nd hand as need a receipt for tax purposes.

Don’t think she will need the most high end plus it is essentially a business tool so it has to deliver on value as well.

Also most high end becomes upwards of rm70k so that’s definitely out of question.

This config looks good to me:

3.0GHz 6-core 8th-generation Intel Core i5 processor, Turbo Boost up to 4.1GHz
16GB 2666MHz DDR4 memory
Radeon Pro 560X with 4GB of GDDR5 memory
512GB SSD storage
Magic Mouse 2
Magic Keyboard - US English
Final Cut Pro X (I'm assuming this is the reason why you want a Mac in the 1st place)
RM 9,948.90

If you don't need to be mobile then iMac > MBP for sure.

Buy the newest cheese grater Mac. Superb upgradability. You can config it as necessary.

Not really - I understand warranty with Apple will be sent to authorised service centres (and can be any of them), unless you take up the retailer’s extra warranties (theft, screen break) which is retailer specific. Further, if you’re taking Apple Care (and not the retailer specific programs), this shouldn’t be an issue.

Do you mean that she has previously edited her videos just fine on a 10 year old MBP? In which case, the highest end would definitely be overkill. I would suggest a 15 inch MBP for portability. Max up on the RAM if possible for future proofing.

Currently the videos she does are shot in 720p and are no more than 10-15 minutes per clip.

It does not seem to be able to handle the 4K videos.

If I'm not mistaken Apple Care is still the gold standard for warranty isn't it?
