Mostly because the XP installation cannot detect AHCI. Newer notebook usually utilize AHCI for better SATA harddisk performance.
There are 3 ways:
1. Load the SATA driver into a floppy then load it during XP installation. (I think notebook now don't have floppy...)
2. Slipstream your XP installation disk with the motherboard SATA driver. (A bit troublesome - don't ask me - I don't know how to do it.)
3. Turn off AHCI in the notebook BIOS. (Easiest way - my way).

Note that you shall not turn on the AHCI if you install windows with AHCI off. Turn it on after the installation will cause XP to crash.

Nothing wrong. As far as I know, shutting down but not turning off the power supply will not totally shut down your PC. Some mainboard still supply current to the usb device like mouse and external hdd

hi,
any idea on how to check out what type of HD is suitable for my PC ?
I'm currently using Maxtor 6E040L0 and i think its a PATA drive, would it be possible for me to change into a SATA drive ?
i dunno whether my MOBO suits or not so i seek for  icon_question.gif

Your southbridge is ICH5. It should support SATA as well.
I think there are two SATA ports on your motherboard.
You can try find it on your motherboard to confirm it.

SLi is for nVidia GC. It mean can put 2 nVidia SLi GC in one mobo that support it. Note that not all nVIdia GC or mobo support SLi.

It has nothing to do with other devices or GC.
