According to Berita Harian, apparently the proposal to scrap cars more than 15 years old will go ahead but on voluntary basis only, an effort to help improve the sales of new cars which have been in a slump this year so far and has only seen a small pick-up in May. One who chooses to scrap his car that is older than 15 years old will be reimbursed a maximum of RM5,000 in the form of a voucher that counts towards the sales and excise duty of the new car purchased. Note it says a MAX of RM5,000 - this means it might be lower if whoever decides the value of the voucher thinks your car is worth lower. Apparently studies have shown that if the scrapping policy is implemented, new car sales will increase by 50,000 to 100,000 cars a year. Being someone who owns a car more than 15 years old, I am directly someone who falls under the target market of this scheme, and in my opinion, it does not entice me to get rid of my 23-year old Nissan Sunny and buy a new car at all. http://paultan.org/archives/2007/06/24/vol...r-scrap-policy/

voluntary basis eh? lets say i have an old car worth RM3000, if i voluntarily send my car to be scrapped, i believe they won't give a voucher more than a RM3000 value, maybe much much lower haizzz

i dun think a 1992 Toyota SEG with good mileage is worse then a proton if not better... hahaha.. i own 1 and I can say... u want to change a brand new wira for it also i say not worth coz it is just too good...
imho, i think this so call scheme doesn't attracts us all coz we all know what is the car price now aday.. so... if u stick to the scheme, all you can afford is local make car only...zzz which I will not entertain..

yalor, since most dealers wud accept trade-in, so why need voucher? but then, the voucher can only use for national car only.

this policy will be very bad for all except "potong" ....
2nd and car value will drop badly and they want to force all buy new car if possible....imagine this....say your car might worth rm10k now and its 15 years old....once this is implemented.....your car price will suddenly drop to rm5k....wanna trade in for new car also lost the rm5k already.....
this is a bad move and will only burden the rakyat.......and summore the election is round the corner.....

The study is inaccurate, it doesn't quite make sense.
If they'd like to stimulate the local market, please, remove the road tax, AND not only you'll get better sales, you'll get less road accident deaths, and prolly less car thefts too, as that should hit the demand for 'stolen items'.
stupid government

If they do this, most of the roads in Malaysia can be empty 50%. Maybe more.

"Kebanyakan kereta yang berumur lebih 15 tahun bernilai sekitar RM5,000 saja seunit. Kereta berumur sebegini sering kali bermasalah dan alat ganti sukar dicari. Jadi, inilah peluang pengguna kereta `tua' beralih kepada kereta lebih baik.

can start to venture scrap car market dee. surely can earn big bucks.
scrap cars normally have lower value compare selling to kedai potong or 2nd hand as they require high cost to scrap cars. moreover they prefer to judge the amount of metal they could scrap rather than the age of the item to judge on vehicle value

though car scrapping policys are pretty common in some other countries, like UK and such. I doubt most malaysians would follow suit on this policy. Instead it might just serve as another outlet for more bribery to go through with.
Also 5k voucher to what?? proton only? or any car that we would like to buy? If it's proton only you can be damn sure this thing won't work at all..

LOL. 5K maximum does not make any sense. I bet if you go to scrap your car you will definately get less.
