Hi LYN,

I just wanted to know if I was overpaying or being cheated confused.gif

I'm using a 2008 Myvi 1.3 around 14x, 000km mileage.

Just sent it for servicing and my mechanic is using GTX M-TEC 10W30 and he told me the next service (major) is after 5,000 KM or 3 months, whichever comes first. Is that normal to be so little? shakehead.gif

My total bill for my recent service was around RM 150 - RM 155

only use Mineral oil and charge you Rm 155 plus you didn't list down what else he did. Overcharged lah.

FYI here is what I did recently.

Shell Helix Ultra 5W40 full synthetic - Rm 99, bought in Giant
Oil filter - Rm 15
Labour change oil - RM 15.

total Rm 129.

Hmm not sure what oil is that so cannot really comment on the price but since it's unknown brand, the price seems high IMHO. Because I can buy Shell FS oil fir under rm100, plus oil filter maybe just rm15, then labour another rm15 so total still less than rm130 but alreasy using well known full synthetic oil.

As for the service interval, just ignore the 3 months and stick to the 5000km interval.

Should I use semi synthetic or synthetic instead? confused.gif
If I'm not mistaken the service before this was GTX Ultraclean 10W-30 and needed to be change after 5,000KM also but 6 months instead of 3 months like my current service.

The breakdown of the current service (GTX M-TEC 10W30)

GTX M-TEC 10W30 4L - RM 99.6
Oil Filter - RM 15
Drain Plug Washer - RM 2.5
Labour - RM 35

I think you might get cheaper Mineral oil if you shop around.

downright cut throat RM35 just for a simple oil change. and usually Drain plug don't need to change. only SC practice changing the drain plug.

to your question whether should you use semi or full synthetic, it depends how much you cover.
for normal driving, usually semi syn is sufficient even for a small overdue mileage.
only if u hardly drive then go for cheap mineral.

If you are like someone doing part time Grab and clock up alot within 6 months, go for fully.

I don't use my car for Grab, just personal driving, roughly 1,000 km plus a little a month?
What I meant by 'over charge' was actually do I need to service it as frequently as the mechanic recommends?

By using semi synthetic, does it mean my car can last longer before it needs to be serviced? confused.gif

For me, using semi-syn is cheaper. Compare to mineral oil, the price is not double but instead of every 5k, you get 10k. You save time and money smile.gif

Why not? It is just car manufacturer sc want to make money I believe.

Last time the semi-syn is standard at sc. Now it become full-syn. During semi-syn time, the service was also every 10k for car under warranty smile.gif

Fully syn can go longer then 10k actually. Remember last time Mobil 1 test for 40k with no sign of wear. I'd say 15k no problem for full syn. Like Toyota manual was said to recommend every 10,000 miles for full syn

Still under warranty has to follow lo, but after warranty, I'd go for 10k on semi-syn. That was what stated under warranty for my X-Trail last time. I continue like that after warranty and the car engine was good for 15 years. smile.gif

oil filter = RM20+-
labor charge = RM20 (max)
Mineral engine Oil = RM60 maybe?

So yeah its over charging..

Anyway next time just ownself buy the oil and filter.
Ayam using Shell fully sync buy from Giant just RM90 (no need discuss about authenticity, if u kiasi just go back direct from Shell)..
oil filter RM38
labour RM20

total 90 + 38 + 20 cheaper than your maibi...my car bigger than your car

This is not really "cut throat" price. Slightliy over priced, maybe. But not up to cut throat.

The mineral oil is sold at RM35 and RM52 in 2 separate website. So average it becomes RM43.50. So the mechanic is charging you double of his cost for the oil.

As for oil filter and drain plug, the pricing is reasonable. No problem changing drain plug as it's only RM2.50.

Labour, now this is a bit pricey considering you use the parts that he provide. If you bring your own parts and oil, some shop charge RM30 and some RM50.

So overall, I guess it is fine. A bit pricey but no so high that you need to be upset about.

As for the service to be done every 5000km, that is standard for mineral oil. If you want longer, you can get semi-syn change every 7500km or full syn for every 10000km. Bear in mind this is standard recommended mileage. A lot of other factors too but don't deviate too far. Like changing it every 1 year only even when your mileage is low. It is better to be safe than save.

Last time, I used to go to Toyota SC for all services for 13 years of my toyota car. They use semi-syn and recommend I go every 5k km. No problem for me as the car never break down or have major problem with the engine.

Okay, thank you all for your advice!

So currently since I am using Mineral oil, should I go the full 5000 km or change according to the date (whichever comes first)?

Just like my grandfather smoke and drink and dont know the word cholesterol. No bodycheckup ever. lived until 93.

You go ask doctor see how many will suggest you live that way.

But I'm sure thats the correct way,... cause it worked for him... right? cool2.gif
