Hello all, I'm looking for a refurbished notebook for personal use. Normal usage (browsing, VS code, light gaming, word, excel, ppt)

Budget: ~RM500 (willing to top up a bit for larger screen)
Model: Lenovo Thinkpad
Specs: i3 / i5 (prefer i3 for less heat)

Anyone have any experience with buying and using refurbished Thinkpads? I've scanned through many ads in Lazada & Shoppee and it seems like most are at least 5 years old. Will they last for at least another 5?

Also, any recommended physical shops from which to purchase one?

If its not recommended to get a refurbished unit, any recommendations on something durable like a Thinkpad around RM1k, but <RM 1.5k.

Thanks

My suggestion is to look for seller that offers 1 yr warranty

Can't help you on the recommendations as I'm not familiar with old+used models

RM500 5year old systems have like 2-4GB RAM and Core DUO CPU.
Painfully slow mechanical HDD that can kick bucket without warning.
Those systems are basically junk sweat.gif

IMHO RM500 is too low to get decent system.

If you can stretch you budget try Dell factory outlet, fully backed by Dell with warranty.
https://www.dell.com/en-my/outlet/

Worth while systems tend to sell out fast, if you see something good don't delay.
Best time to shop before or start of new month, when site is restocked.

Few questions.

1. Do you remember the name of shop?

2. Roughly how much for stock unmoded model?

3. And roughly how much for 8gb ram and SSD?

4. Also do they sell refurbished t50x series? (15" thinkpads)

Thanks

1. nope, like i said you can just go to 2nd floor of low yat using the elevator, and u will see it after u get out the elevator and turn right

2. no idea, u need to go there and ask, but i also see some people sold their thinkpad in the garage sales section, maybe you can check it there for rough estimation.

3. u can check the garage sales section for that, but in my case, my t430s already have 8gb ram (2x4gb) and if i want to upgrade to 16gb (2x8gb) the store ask rm200. For SSD, im not too sure if u mean msata ssd or normal ssd, i bought mine using aliexpress and it only cost me around rm160 for a new 240gb msata.

4. u go and see by urself bro, last time i think they have, as well as x1.

Thx.
I'm still reading some of the things on YouTube, reddit. Looks like it may be possible to add the old keyboard style on t430(not sure if possible on t430s) , change display screen to ips. And the usual stuff like replace dvd drive with hdd cage.
Im not sure yet if I will go this route or use a latter model

Yes - that's the beauty of Thinkpad. Replace like it's a desktop

Same refresh rate or can replace higher rate example 120hz to 144hz instead of 60hz panel?

Or its bottleneck by mainboard or gpu? hmm.gif

Question is, do you really need a ThinkPad? Are you buying it because of the name, or reputation.

Because, whatever the brand name may be, it is still a 5 years old computer, and subject to the wear and tear any standard electronics go through.

I can't afford a new laptop on my budget so yes it's mainly for the reputation that it just keeps working and is fairly easy to maintain.

I'm open to suggestions though.

First, determine what you want to do with the laptop. Word processing require less computer power than if you need to render short videos. Are you going to watch youtube videos? Facebook?

Second, determine your maximum budget. Go as high as you are comfortable with.

Third, leg work. Read reviews, ask for advice the minimum processor spec needed to do the job. This part is where most people get it wrong. Processor technology evolves all the time, and a core 2 duo from 7 years ago may only have the same performance as a current gen celeron or pentium. Base your decision on equivalent benchmark.

For a core 2 duo, you'd be better off if you can score an AMD A6 or even a N3350 celeron. You may pay a bit more, but I can guarantee you it can at least play youtube better.

Wouldn't it make sense to buy something that is decent that would last longer and is also backed up by proper warranty? I've been on Dell's refurbished outlet for a while now but saw recently that they dropped their prices for many of their units compared to before. Could possibly find something decent there smile.gif

How much lower are these refurbished laptops compared to the retail? I believe we can't view before buying, correct?
