The pic was taken during midnight , which was about 2 a.m. i guest. When i saw the pic on the camera LCD, i feel weird and i thought my LCD got problem. Later i view it on my pc and came out the same result.

I just wish to know what had happened to my pic. Or my compact got problem.

Need some sifu to give opinion.

First off, what are your settings?

2ndly, your hands (I assume u didn't use a tripod) are shaky. The noise is very visible.

My first few moon pics looks like yours. =) Take time to tweak lo.

Yes, you are right , is a moon. I took it at the Kem Pacat near the peak of Gunung Nuang, Hulu Langat. My settings are:

shuttle speed= 2 sec
aperture= 2.7
focal length= 7.70
noice reduction= on

Interesting... it could be something to do with your camera's sensor. Did you encounter vertical line problem with other night shots?

Yes, when the shutter speed becomes slower, the vertical lines become more visible and clearer.

I also found out that some daily shots also visible when observe it clearly.

What had happen actually? Is it my compact CCD problem?

looks like vertical banding to me

its banding. nothing wrong with ur camera, except that you are pushing it to its limits (long exposure, low light, probably high ISO)

It's a CCD or circuitry problem.
Throw it back to the service centre if still under warranty and demand for a replacement. The worst that could happen is that they refuse to repair/replace it and tell you what some other forummers have told you: "you are pushing your camera to the limits, etc. etc."

To make your case stronger for a replacement, keep and show a few of the daytime shots to the service personnel so that they can't argue you're using your camera in "extremes not designed for".

I am not sure whether i pushes it to its limit or not because my compact have the slowest shuttle at 16sec. While i am just setting it at 2 sec only.


I find out that during some indoor scene(night) , vertical lines can be observe. While during daytime scene(with sunlight but in dark condition), vertical lines does not occur.

Is very weird, right?

This pic was shot during the time that is almost night(indoor). Vertical lines can be observe at those dark area.



At the sme day, this pic was shot at out door. Verticals line can be clearly observe.

The two pics in the post above that had the banding were in ISO400.
Can you try taking daylight pics with ISO400 sensitivity and see if the bands are there?
I don't even get this on my Canon Powershot A510 at ISO400, and on my sister's Powershot A540 at ISO800.

Most probably something related to high ISO electronic noise interference.
At any rate, do make it a point to visit the service centre.

By the way, I have try some daylight pics with ISO400 sensitivity.

The results is that there are no banding effect but the noise is quite visible.

I own this compact for more than 2 years. The warranty has all gone.

Maybe is time to buy a new one.......

I've processed one of your photos to make the bands more obvious. It's much less noticeable in daylight shots, but that doesn't mean it's not there. It's usually hiding in the shadows. In fact, look at the satellite dish in the original photo more closely: looks familiar?

wat camera u are using?

I am currently using Sanyo VPC-AZ3EX compact with max 8.0 MP.

Is it time to buy a new cam or go for repairing? If is time to buy a new cam, should i start with a prosumer or dSLR? If want to repair, which shop to go?

Most probably not worth repairing but why not ask to see how much it'll cost you?

No matter what type or model of camera you're buying, please test it out before buying by doing a number of high ISO shots underexposed or in a dark setting. If you candidate camera can have it's EV adjusted (either has shutter or aperture priority mode, or fully manual mode) to about -1, -2 EV and see if you can spot any bands.

Both of my S$2000 E-330 and S$1350 E-510 has bands at high ISO too and I am disappointed with Olympus for this. But at least there are a lot more other features in them to enjoy.

How high is the ISO that can let bands to occur?

My compact has a highest ISO at 400 and you know, bands occur.

It varies from camera to camera.

Nikon's DSLR dont have much banding or in fact none at high ISo up to 3200. It may have a lot of noise though.

Depends also from batch to batch.
Some are faulty batches, like early Nikon D200, and some Canon 20D, 30D.

Those that I know that bands due to design limitations are the Pentax K10D and any Olympus DSLR that uses the NMOS sensor.
