Hi I'm a 5-month pregnant woman. I've always had perfect teeth. Recently I've noticed bleeding of gums while brushing my teeth. And also most of the teeth are getting decaying too. I did a research on it and, happened to read a blog of a dental clinic in Burlington. It says that "As hormones change during pregnancy, there can be increased risks to your oral health". Is it true? Is pregnancy would be the reason behind my dental issue?

Please go for dental checkup during your pregnancy. If your using gov prenatal care, there is a part where u need to do the dental check up. Pregnancy itself doesnt cause tooth decay or gum bleeding. However, pregnant mothers are more susceptible to gum problems n tooth decay.

I read that hormones contribute to bleeding gum and also remember you're losing calcium which is very important for healthy teeth. I told my gynae about my bleeding gum and she asked me not to skip my calcium supplement. At the early third trimester, the bleeding gum stopped. Maybe because hormone changed again. I guess dental health is normal to pregnant ladies due to hormone changes. Mine stopped bleeding in 3 trimesters. You may check with your dentist if you are not comfortable with the bleeding/ decay. Have a happy pregnancy.

Good to visit a dentist especially if your last visit was some time ago. Nothing stays perfect forever.

Studying dentistry here and I just read the topic on pregnancy and oral health. It is indeed that the increase of progesterone hormone during pregnancy can cause inflammation of gums and even cause progenitor Franklin’s (we call it pregnancy granuloma, as it occurs frequently in pregnant mothers)
Nevertheless, schedule an appointment with the dentist. I would suggest to approach unis that have dental programme as they have speacilists /lectures that knw more about oral pathology. Their fees is low too (RM10 for my uni only).
