Hi guys, I have a set of 5.1 speakers from JBL, they were attached to a Sherwood AV receiver. Unfortunately the Sherwood AV receiver LCD backlight is kaput, although the AV-R itself still functions well (blind operation). The JBL speakers sound great to me, and it would be a waste to not use them. I have the option of repairing it or simply buying a new receiver. These models in the title are the cheaper "branded" AV Receivers that I can find on the market. I am not an audiophile; I just need an AV receiver to utilize the speakers - something loud, clear (somewhat), reliable are fine. The "fidelity" is not too important.

Any comments on these choices? Prices are also posted for reference, I can confirm that these are real price drops since I have been following them for a while

Denon warranty is ok in Malaysia but if repair under warranty will have to wait quite long as the unit usually send to Singapore to repair

Onkyo Service Center is Hwee Seng at PJ... Soon they will take over service for Pioneer AV/amp as well because Onkyo has acquired Pioneer.
I briefly auditioned the Denon model you mentioned last year before purchased my current Onkyo A-9010 integrated amp. I choose integrated amp because into 2 channel stereo setup only for music only. The Denon on another hand has more bass slam and higher treble on the same bookshelf speaker compared to my Onkyo, which I think is better for movie, but mid vocal lost a little, perhaps it's 5.1 setup requiring center speaker? But since you have subwoofer, bass slam on front speaker shouldn't be a major concern.

Thanks

SOrry can you briefly explain what an "integrated amp" is and how does it apply to my 5.1 JBL setup? Mainly to be used for movies.

I wouldnt mind. but if the prices are the same, but using old tech and used condition; new would be preferable

My usability is low, not an audiophile, so super functions available but higher-end products may not be required

looking at choices of your listed AVR.. very basic.. no ATMOS...

in my case.. i like 2nd item... used to own Onkyo old SR608.. then moving to Yamaha 2060.. i was at your stage with old onkyo.. dun bother with finding better sound solution.. until... i upgrade to Yamaha AVR.. then things start to change.. how I like the new improved sound.. and then cant stop upgrading stuff... haha.. with newer audio format (let say ATMOS).. u will be amaze (feel like new to HT again)...

that is my experience... this journey hard to stop... haha

Integrated amp only for 2 speaker, for stereo usage. That's why I said I chose the current amp I'm using instead of Denon.

Atmos? I have atmos in my PC and phone. hahaha I don't know what Atmos is in terms of AV

LIke I said, my usage are basics. It's not for me actually, for my old man and family. Nothing too fancy, not a priority and not a hobby. These 2nd hand items... do they start at Rm1.2k?

Noted, I can forget about it then since mine will be for movies and using 5.1 JBL. Loved the sound when the Sherwood AV was still functional.

Thanks for chiming in. THese are the kinds of tips I want. It's easy to say "just get the best, the most expensive one! Get Atmos!" without thinking/considering my current available setup (The 5.1 JBL) and budget (as you can see, about RM1.2-1.3k)

p/s Still dont know what Atmos amp is. I guess don't really need to know if I just want to start with the basics.

Integrated amplifier is an amplifier that has both pre-amp and power amp integrated in one unit and usually has low to medium power amp like 20~40W output. Usually it will have pre-amp output if you want to connect to higher power amp.

If you want surround sound like 5.1, 7.1, 7.2, etc; you are looking for A/V Amplifier. It will have more output amplifier, unlike music amplifier with stereo output.

i think i will just get the denon simply due to the fact that it has Bluetooth, and I love linking my phone-spotify to my own portable BT radio. Now I can do it straight to the AV
