QUOTE(ZM Fong @ Apr 26 2019, 06:36 PM) How I rate gaming laptops Build quality and cooling first. Display and input devices second. QC and reliability are part of consideration
No offense, but I see lots of illegear, L51 and other rebranded Clevos as part of your recommended list. Those laptops are a real hassle to get RMA especially if you dont stay in KV or in KV but not close to their HQs. But the list seems to be missing some of the good lower-end models released recently (or gone thru price cut)? Now you can get Dell G5 1650 for under 3.5k and also MSI Alpha 15 with R7 and RX5600 for about 4.2k. Would those be significantly better than Illegear Raven and L51 Forge (especially the low-spec OEMs)?

QUOTE(ZM Fong @ May 15 2020, 10:17 AM) That's why I didn't put servicing/aftersales as a requirement/part of the rating in this list. There are many factors that could affect your buying choice (eg aftersales), this list is just a guideline/whitelist G5 has poor thermals Alpha 15 is using a TDP up low power APU and AMD GPU (which isn't that power+thermal efficient for laptops and might have driver issues, in fact until now there are still driver/software related issues in this model even though some of them are solved). Build quality is so so As long as the thermals are at least decent and exterior build quality is at least OK, I'll put them into the list regardless of brands/ODMs Note that this list hasn't been updated for quite a long time (waiting for new models) Curious, notebookcheck didnt rate G5 as producing too hot temperatures: https://www.notebookcheck.net/Dell-G5-15-55...w.422281.0.htmlThe system is also stable at 1H under full load. Is the thermals much worse than the low end Raven SE or Forge51? Asking because im keen to buy a G5/G7.

QUOTE(eoahud @ May 18 2020, 11:29 PM) What about the new Lenovo 5i and 7i? Read that it's going to launch in Malaysia by end of month. Suggest u go try Legion 5i in the shop before buying. While overall no complaints with Lenovo (I use thinkpad for work), I find Legion to be overpriced and seriously subpar display. For example, originally I thought Lenovo was value-for-money when comparing specs, but when I checked out 540 display, its seriously below average, I would say the 60Hz display, 250 nits that comes with the 1660Ti model is very poor in fact. Its even worse than comparable "budget" offerings from Asus and MSI Alpha 15 (IMHO). So my advice is always look at the laptop in person if you can, otherwise you may regret if it has something you can't live with.

QUOTE(okw1 @ May 19 2020, 05:03 PM) I just checked their website, and found out that their customize options are not provide the 144hz screen option, weird. There is, but you need to scroll for the >RM5k options. For that price, you may as well wait for the new Zephyrus G15 with AMD 4000 and 1660Ti. Much better than the outdated Legion 540 IMHO.

QUOTE(okw1 @ May 19 2020, 05:07 PM) Ya I just found that the only model that provide 144hz screen in customization are LEGION Y740-15IRHG. I am still waiting for Lenovo and Acer new laptop. The Asus laptop I remember I had saw review on not so good cooling so I will skip that laptop. Edit: I saw review from here: https://www.ultrabookreview.com/37011-asus-...rus-g15-review/Serious question: I see lots of weight placed on thermal (here and also elsewhere) but isn't it just so much cheaper and convenient to buy cooling pad for your laptop? A good one can lower your CPU and GPU temp by between 5-10 degrees. You can buy a decent coolermaster fan pad with aluminium surface and turbo 1800rpm fan for less than RM150 on Lazada. For me, isn't value for money and decent display (you can't change or add on display easily - even if you buy second screen its neither simple nor light to carry, plus its expensive!) more important than thermals?

QUOTE(ZM Fong @ May 19 2020, 04:59 PM) need to get good discounts there are optional 300 nits high sRGB 60Hz and 144Hz options, my old Y530 have 144Hz high sRGB option even with 1050Ti How much did it cost you (at the time)? Quite rare to find what is relatively lower-spec legion with such a good screen. Normally, those screens are reserved for the 1070++ options and cost $$$$. You customized yourself?

QUOTE(Ethan Hunt @ May 20 2020, 12:36 PM) Well Acer Triton 300 retailed just at RM3699 (can get lower in Lazada), come with 144hz, 72%NTSC and 300nits. I wonder if its a good display. Don't have a opportunity to view in real life. The rest of the spec is i5-9300H, GTX1650, 4GB Ram, 512GB SSD. Cons: Thermal is not that good. i5-9300H + GTX1650 (non Max-P) would probably not need very good thermal anyway. Its not like you're cramming RTX2070 Max-P inside with i7. With this setup you wont be able to play high/ultra-settings for AAA games anyway (which is normally what taxes your laptop heavily) although maybe very high-res video editing can be problematic too. I would say main drawback is 4GB Ram only. On Lazada, Kingston SODIMM 2666Mhz 8GB RAM is ~ RM180. Multiply by 2 and you will need to add about RM400 (shipping cost blah blah) all in and take your cost to RM4.1k.

QUOTE(MrYohz @ Jun 26 2020, 12:31 AM) Hi Sir, Can you advice me out of this 4 laptops? Currently I am looking for a gaming laptop for traveling around and do some photos/video editing. Prefer something light and can cope with some games such as PUBG, CSGO, Assassin Creed and etc. My budget is around 3.5k-4.5k and i found below laptop is at my budget range at the moment. Lenovo Legion 5 15(Ryzen)
Lenovo Legion 5 15 (Intel Core I5)
Lenovo Legion 5 17 (Intel Core I5)
Forge 15R I got a few questions here and I wish that you could enlighten me. 1) Is AMD Ryzen processor better than Intel? Eg the Lenovo Legion 5 15 that comes with Ryzen 5 4600h or the Forge 15R Ryzen 3 3300X. 2) Is 144hz screen really worth it? I read some review and found that graphic card such as 1650 is not able to run 144hz effectively. 3) If you have any better choices / recommendation, please feel free to suggest? Thanks in advanced! You better add in extra RM300+++ for the Forge 15R, the advertising is quite misleading, since it comes without Windows. Unactivated means you need a product key for that, which will cost you between 300-400 although you can always try a "reseller" on Shopee or Lazada.
