Y740 is better, but doesn't mean Y540 has bad build quality

Different cooling: Y740 cools slightly better despite slightly thinner chassis
Y740 has GSYNC, RGB and TB3
Y740 don't have numpad and has weird keyboard layout+worse typing feel

Y540 is the same with Y7000SE
