Get mirrorless. No point DSLR anymore. Get light-weight camera like Olympus PEN series or Panasonic GF series. At least when you go out to take pictures, you don't feel like you're in a gym.

Your handphone has camera? Play with that first.

Then point and shoot compact camera.

Don’t straight go to DSLR.

Buy a cheap used DSLR to get the hang of manually playing with the aperture, shutter speed, ISO etc... Once you're comfortable with the controls and prepare for the next step then you commit and get a good DSLR/Mirrorless.

I've seen too many times people straight buy a new DSLR and in the end use it the exact same way as point and shoot.

Another thing about DSLR is you need to post process most of your photos with software like Lightroom or Aperture. Most people don't realize today's phone do the post processing for you so when they use DSLR and see the color and all like not nice they go back to their phone.

go for second hand prosumer model (should be less than RM1500). Learn the basic, start to invest on good lens. Once you get all basic knowledge only upgrade the body.

+1
the best camera is the camera which you have now.
start with your phone. read or watch youtube and learn about composition, lighting then try taking photos of everyday things. the more you shoot, the more you learn.
then look for maybe a second hand sony rx 100 or fujifilm x series. the former comes with a zoom lens and the latter is fix lens...which is also good as it makes you move around to compose your shot.
then slowly progress to a mirrorless camera and different lenses.
dslr is dying already, so no point.

For the Point and Shoot, the Sony RX100M3 or RX100M5A (Fastest/Brightest for any point and shoot, 1" sensor) is a great place to start =D

Used Sony a6000 + used kit lens = RM1300 can get already.
Mirrorless camera is easier to learn, what you see is what you get (photo).
If you want to upgrade to full frame sony later, you can buy FE / full frame on your apsc camera.

Biggest risk for used DSLR is high shutter count (or in layman term, how many photos the camera has taken so far)

For me the advice I would give for people who want to venture into DSLR is to get a cheap 2nd hand DSLR (or borrow one would be much better) and play around for a few weeks to see if you really want to venture into DSLR. For me the main thing at the start is to get used to the controls and settings and determine what kind of photos you shoot. With this you can start to identify what is the main features you need in a DSLR and identify what body you can target in future upgrades.

DSLR heavy af, even lens are heavy, mirrorless is good enough.
Better to get something that you will use rather than something accumulate dust like majority of DSLR.
If you want to go hardcore serious just go medium format directly.

How is it expensive? It is the least expensive interchangeable lens system out there. TS can get the kit lens and play around with it first.

system not matured enough. you can get tons of new or used lens for dslr for a very cheap price. mirrorless is different story. entry lvl body is kinda cheap but lots of feature missing.

so my honest advice for beginner, get a used dslr body and lens. only upgrade when you feel confident or want to continue playing
