How do I know whether the SSD shown in the viewnet price list is for desktops or laptops? Im looking for a SSD for my laptop as it only uses a HDD, my laptop is slow and its brand new. Can you guys also recommend a good SSD for my laptop Pavilion 15. I dont want to spend too much money so a 128gb SSD should be good enough to keep windows 10 in the SSD and hopefully it will improve the processing speed.
Any recommendations to improve speed of laptop besides adding SSD or RAM?

nowadays laptop come with 1TB 5400rpm HDD, that's why you feel very slow.. just change to SSD will solve your problem. SSD is 2.5" inch and it's OK for both desktop and laptops, so you're good to go.. if you don't want spend much, then get the crucial BX500 128GB for RM99.00 at viewnet, i think still can bargain few ringgit more.. good luck and enjoy your new laptop

Min should be 8GB RAM and 256GB SSD. Higher always better.

I don't recommend buying cheaper SSDs though. I bought the cheapest possible m.2 sata stick last year from viewnet, this thing runs hot. Above 60C temps during idle, I'm kinda worried about its longevity. Mine is 240gb model from Transcend if you're wondering. Try to get at least 240gb or 250gb models since my friend who owns a 120gb one chokes on storage since his adobe suite takes up the entire space. RM250 should get you a decent 200gb-ish ssd. Don't get NVMe ones if you're low on budget unless you really crave for extra speed.

Can list down your laptop model? So can tell your laptop use 2.5 inch type or M.2 type, so people here can give a better recommendation.
Also after purchase new SSD, need to Google some info on how to transfer all your Windows or data from your current HDD to the new SSD.
Btw, SSD is dirt cheap now and try not to go 120GB, not worth it and you'll may run out of space very soon. Minimum got 250GB above, or if have budget around RM300 above, go for 480GB.

dont go for those cheap SSD for your OS drive. while they have great value in terms of capacity, they have low endurance. they're good for bulk storage (for keeping downloads, movies, documents) and some say they're okay for keeping game files.
for OS drive, get something more durable, has dedicated DRAM for caching and at least 5 years warranty and 240/256GB of storage size.

You can go with like 256GB SSD, they are very cheap now, I even seen in our markets something from Radeon AMD as well as M.2 too;) Not sure how true is this. Memory also from that brand, but anyway 8Gb is a must today and go for 1.35V one if possible, those are just better.

Another reason not to go with lower capacity sad is that some of them have lower controller chip spec than the higher capacity one. For example, same brand same model line, same release year, a 120 GB SSD performance is significantly lower than at least the 240 GB one.
Options of cheaper variant will always be there, but you should know not to go for the cheapest one if you can afford higher one.

Not controller chip spec, but less channel Say, 240GB has 4 NAND flashes with 4-channels controller. If the manufacturer decided to use the same NAND in 128GB, only 2 NAND flashes are needed, but in turn the controller only works at 2 channels. Another factor is the reduction in SLC cache size. The performance hurts a lot for TLC & QLC SSD, especially you start to fill it up. This post has been edited by kingkingyyk: May 21 2019, 04:22 PM

Laptop HDD are 2.5 inch type, SSD also available in 2.5 inch type, so they can just direct replace your old HDD. Some laptop also have a M.2 slot specifically for SSD, they are much smaller than 2.5 inch type. Check your laptop website for type of slot availability.
