Hello all,

Need some help/advices from some of you experts.

Basically last Sunday, my house was wrecked by the storm in which my roof was blown away by the wind (crazy i know). Water started pouring into our house and destroyed the upper floor almost entirely, from furnitures, electrical appliances, all the way to the tiles. We are still trying to assess the damages for now but priority is to restore the roof ASAP. However, based on the initial assessment done by the insurance evaluator, we are probably able to only claim back a fraction of the cost to repair.

Thing is, we had the entire roof replaced just 2.5 years ago (its relatively new), and couldn't believe it when the entire roof literally got uprooted by the wind. Please see pictures for your reference.

So now, i have a few questions:

1) What other avenues can we file for damages for such an event? The consumer tribunal?

2) Can we sue to the previous contractor due to negligence/poor quality of work? How do we prove that?

It was heart-wrecking to see the house almost destroyed by the wind, especially for my aged parents who had to go through this. Any help and advicess here will be much appreciated!

Thanks!

hmm..
only your house is affected...
so seems like confirmed the contractor did bad job / low quality work.

but normally work like this. contractors give like 2 years warranty only or 1 year only (depending on the contractors).
so yours like 2.5 year which above the period given.

Can you take a close up photo of the roof beams and supports? It looks odd

Yeah, pretty sure your insurance does not cover it. Your roof did not collapse so it is not a problem with your truss. Your contractor did a piss poor job but I highly doubt they will own up to it depending how close you are with the roofing contractor.

What kind of roof did u have? Looks like a metal roof instead of roof tiles.

It could be that your roof was not secured enough to the rafters/battens. You may check on this issue.

I thought the roof tiles is one piece by I piece just lay on top. Also, you didn't have metal below tiles. Not sure if that help!

can sue. doesn't matter if the defect liability period is over. you can opt to repair it first then claim from the developer after.

if they refuse to pay, bring them to court (PM tepi kalau minat)

Wow, seriously i would blame the previous contractor for not doing a good job, if the house on the left wasnt affected yours shouldn't be since yours was just done 2.5 years ago.

Judging from photos circumstantial evidences as follows;
a) Why only your roof suffers such damages and others next door not??? Most probably defective works.
b) Roof trusses looks to be intact and assume that only roof tiles blown away.
c) Likely roof constructed not according to specification.
d) Most common defect is roof tiles not nailed onto the roof rafters.
f) Inspect to confirm and if true demand for compensation and if refused sue for damages

doesn't looks like roof tiles to me..any before photo? if not roof tiles, you will need extra reinforcement to secure the roof if it is a big whole piece.
