Both my previous and current mechanics advised me to put gear into neutral during short stops in traffic jams or at the traffic lights.

Do you put in neutral like me?

The appropriate answer is:
Short stops traffic lights no need.
Long traffic lights, sure.

And

The real answer is:
- do either up to you. Leaving it in D stresses the engine/transmissions. So does constantly shifting D to N to D.

But the key is, its too insignificant to actually say which does more (or any) damage beyond what is considered normal wear and tear. And you can argue otherwise till pigs can fly but this is not a new topic. It has been going on since the dawn of AT transmissions. And till today people still talk about it.

And the people who waste time to talk/argue/discuss about it have long gone on to change their cars even before their AT box ever fail on them.

If the driver rev up in N and then shift to D, that torque converter won't last long.

if you treat DCT transmission as auto gearbox, then yes.
torque converter are clutch equivalent of auto gear box, but it is too complex to explain.

Depends on automatic transmission type. Normal torque converter - nothing will happen. As for dual clutch - N would be better if stop for long time. For CVT - nothing will happen too.

But the results will vary. Complex auto transmission technology. Can't generalise.

Automatic transmission with liquid clutch packs, just leave it in D. Shifting to N and back causes more wear.
Dct, is designed to do the same. I drive one and just leave it in D. I just don't creep along like you can with the an automatic.

Actually read/watched an engineers perspective of this

Holding it in gear damages your torque converter, or exerts more wear on it

Constant switching tires out the gear bands (I think that’s what it’s called)

Anyway;
Short Stop - in gear
Long Stop - neutral
Seems to be alright

The.main reason I put to neutral is to disconnect the transmission from the engine. Reason being if someone rear ends you. The transmission and engine not damaged. Never put in park because if you are rear ended the entire transmission will be damaged.

For me , I have another reason to put in neutral; avoid accidentally press the gas pedal in case someone bang from the rear, well your mileage may vary

People worried about shifting back and forth between D and N. Topkek. When the rest of the gearbox is gonna fail long before this.

Don't worry if you drive a VW, Nissan, or Honda.

Instead of doing that, remember to change ATF and filter done more help

Take parking ticket put into Park. Then take ticket already shift into D.
