Every time I try and use the start menu on my Windows 10 it comes up with a message critical error and automatically restarts my PC. The start menu just does not work. How do I put it right? I understand this is a common issue with Windows 10.

Ideas and assistance are greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Try the Start menu troubleshooter. After you've completed the troubleshooter, restart your device.

Is that going to create a Windows Old, change the ~/user accounts, or break/unregister applications?

Yes, it will create Windows.old file. It won't change the user account and don't break application.

I suggest you use the official ISO file to perform the In-Place Upgrade to fix your installation download windows 10:

I used the official MS ISO, and reinstalled over top, only to have the exact same issue. The start menu stopped responding at some point. Not sure if it was at the point of it entering standby or not.
