IMHO if you bought a legit copy of Mac OS, it would be
ok to install it on your laptop.

The trouble is, there's no Mac OS on sale for Intel chips
at the moment so you'll have to illegally download it off
the net.

I guess it would be ok also if you use it for a while and
see if you like it. Then you can decide to buy a Mac!

nope. It's illegal anyway. Mac os is not like winxp or any version of windows. mac os can only be install in apple machine. That's all. Full stop. Whether you own a copy of mac os disc or not, it still illegal to be install other than apple machine.

Anyway, TS, you go try it la, no harm anyway.. Or check http://wiki.osx86project.org/wiki/index.php/Main_Page

REmember to backup your important data.. Good luck wink.gif

Apple's EULA for OS X says you can only install OS X on an Apple-labelled computer so you have to buy an Ipod to get the Apple Stickers and then you can stick one on your PC case. That should make it all OK if I were presiding over your court meeting with Apple Inc. Or maybe not.

Back to the question on topic. GMA950 chipset should be OK, just try and see lah. But remember once you install OS X, there's no going back to XP. It's that good. Even if it doesn't fully work, it'll make you want to buy a real Mac.

I'm running OS X on an old Acer Travelmate 280. P4M 2.2Ghz with 845 chipset. Most things work but graphics, no QE/CI (ie no accelerated graphics) which is a bit of a bummer.

Let's put it in an analogy. If OSX was a car, you'd buy a license to use the car based on the terms of the EULA which means you can only drive the car on Selangor roads. If at anytime you violate the EULA, say by going to Cameron Highlands for a holiday which would be difficult anyway since only Selangor roads have rails meant for the car, then Apple has the right to revoke your license hence taking your car back to Applestore. But of course they'd have to catch you first.

If you really want to use OS X, I suggest stealing an iMac or a Macbook Pro than trying to run it on a hackintosh since according to some reports from the US, piracy is a worse crime than robbery, fraud, etc... Also it'll save you a lot of headaches cos lotsa things don't work in a hackintosh.

Only if you like Apple Genius wannabes hovering over you watching every step you make while you're within keyb & mouse range of the Mac in the store. The last time I was in one looking at a Mac Pro, I think they thought I was gonna scoot off with it, Kensington lock & all. Then they really panicked when I opened a Terminal window and started to ask what I was doing. It was wierd. It wasn't like I was going to sudo rm -Rf /*.

btw this was at a certain studio which specialises in Macs at LYP.

That's what the warranty is for lah biggrin.gif

A Mac is just another computer, made by the same Taiwanese manufacturers (Quanta, Foxconn etc) and using similar components (same RAM, HDD, chipset, CPU). I maintained hundreds of Macs in a previous job, they died at about the same rate as HP, Dell, IBM...

Btw, just to let you guys know that although hackintosh or osx86 is illegal, but apple still don't care much. So don't worry about those privacy thingy. Do you guys heard about the leaked leopard beta? It was leaked like last week ago. It only last for few hours, then apple ppl direct remove the leaked beta. Superb fast..

Now back to the topic, why those hackintosh (10.4.8 or 10.4.9 iso) never kena ban or remove? Why? Cos' i believe that ton of ppl try hackintosh, after try, those ppl will buy a real mac, or at least half of them. So miramar, don't worry about those EULA thingy la.. If apple really want to sue you those illegal mac osx, apple will. But now, i'm sure lotz ppl use hackintosh or try it. And apple kinda "support" hackintosh btw. Or else, apple sure remove if apple want to. Ntg is impossible for them wink.gif

The hackintosh actually generates sales of real Macs for Apple. I speak from my own experience. I've been a long time Mac user & advocate (& Windows user also). My first "Apple-labelled computer" was a Performa 630 (System 7.5). Now I own an iMac 17" and like to play around with hackintosh.

I have this Acer Travelmate notebook running OSX which I show to some of my customers or friends. These are ppl who are brought up on Windows and have never felt the need to try anything else. I'd show them OSX on my hackinbook and most of them love it. So far I have at least 3 friends who bought a real Mac after having the chance to try OSX on my notebook. It's become a little side income thing for me. Better than selling PCs since the margins are higher.

So, in this case anyway, Apple should be be happy that there is such a thing as the hackintosh. It's a pity that I can't use OSX on a PC legally. Instead we have ppl selling underground PowerMac G6/G7 and even notebooks preconfigured with OSX for a premium of a few hundred ringgit.

very true. Since last two years if i remember right, i tried osx86 till now. And i show few my friends. They love it. But the problem is apple machine is usually pricey compare to the others. I will buy a real mac soon, now still waiting for santa "clause" macbook. mbp wayyyy over my budget.. sad.gif
