I want to pursue pure physics, I have satisfied all the requirements for all the Universities, just wondering whether I will get the course or not?

3.17 is reasonable results for physics if you took the required papers (physics, advanced maths)

are you asking for local uni or private uni?

Are you bumi or non-bumi?

If you are looking for local uni, what courses are you targeting for?

What is your first choice, second or third choice for courses?

Better pursue engineering.

Pure science not so much appreciated in Malaysia haha

You can check out UTP, they have pure science courses if I'm not mistaken Applied Science but you can try too with Applied Chemistry, chances on working with OnG company is higher with UTP.

Do you pursue other activities like sports or clubs for that matter? If you do and have been actively involved you will stand a better chance. If however there is no or minimal involvement then it's quite hard...

I scored slightly higher than that for my stpm last time, but i took biology. i never got any bio related courses that i applied for in local uni despite meeting the pre-requisites. They offered me some useless course in umt, which i declined obviously. Scholarships are hard to come by too. But just try all the available options, mana tau you can get. Or just save the trouble and enroll in private uni

Non-bumi
I'm targeting for pure physics
First second and third are all pure physics

I'm aware of the repercussions of taking pure physics but it is my passion, i'm currently teaching now and I have a backup plan if my plan goes south, so instead of discouraging, let's encourage, shall we?

I scored solid A for physics and B+ for Mathematics, so don't judge if you don't know the full story

oh wow A for physics in STPM, how solid is solid? 100 marks?

A friend of mine 4A* for A level pursuing mech.eng in Uni toronto with full scholarship

Another rejected MIT offer for bachelor of maths even though he's having a gold medal in 2014 olympiad maths representing Malaysia

so that builds my expectation that only genius will go pure science/maths

3.17....... sorry la i cannot not judge

It is meaningless to argue with you, then again you are talking about your friend, not about you, so let's talk about ourselves instead of third person.

You asked about my marks in STPM, then you clearly have no idea how they calculate marks in STPM.

So, remember this, I will enter pure physics regardless whether I'm a genius or not and I will prove you wrong. So that your tiny brain can fully comprehend what's happening around the world or even my statement.

im not trying to pick a fight lol, it sounds like you are the one who is easily triggered

how they calculate marks - if you scored for every question then obviously you are 100% correct, which translates into a A, or you are trying to tell me about that benchmark shyt? that only proves how lucky you are then LOL

im just telling you what are some of the brightest people from malaysia are doing, then you know how tiny your mindset is build up on. Pure physics? please dont disgrace the subject

seems like you are having a really high ego, which is build up from a 3.17 cgpa??? did you even realize 666 people scored 4.0

if you are so certain then don't bother coming to ask whether you can get accepted in the first place or not. lmfao

you can prove me wrong, only when you graduate with a first class honours in physics with some reputable uni

Nampak gayanya you sudah decided to buat Pure Physics for your Bachelor's. So why still open thread and ask for opinions?

rclxub.gif

What other people say is true bro. There is a very limited future for Pure Physics in Malaysia. Do let me know if you want an open discussion on this. I believe I am more than able to provide you with sound advice as I have been in academia for the past 7 years as a scientist.

I'm not trying to pick a fight either, please take your time and do some research on STPM grading system. I'm not boosting my ego and my cgpa is not high, I agree with you on that subject. My passion is physics and I'm not disgracing it. If I can't do then I won't choose that course. There are far greater people than me and you who have started from humblest origins and I respect them always and also your friend who went into the mathematical olympiad. I'm not trying to be rude. I don't want any grudges. Lastly friend, there are people who succeed in life eventhough they didn't well in exam. Yes, I have slipped a lot in my STPM, but I'm not going to give up. Thank you friend

if you can calm down, then we definitely speak nicely about this which can be a great conversation

im not saying you cannot succeed, its just that how you define success if terms of choosing this pathway down

if you want to make big money, then definitely this is not the way you should choose, so thats why a lot of people in this thread sort of discourage you

but if you aim to be a full time researcher and chasing for the new breakthroughs in physics, then by no means just go ahead

Yes, you are exactly correct. I don't want big bucks, I just want to be a researcher. Yes, I'm not a mathematical genius and certainly not a physicist but I know I will try. Thank you

Should not a problem for u to enrol into pure physics course. Its has low demand during my time 15 years ago. I guess its still the same and not many ppl applying for pure physic course hence u get less competition from bumi and non bumi. Only pure enthusiast will list it as 1st choice, definitely have to try if i were u.

since you have already decided, go all the way but looking at the replies and with your criteria, it's hard getting the subject you want. Better make plans for overseas or private uni if that fails.

Hmmm, people can be real nasty now a day.

There are many way in giving your opinion when one asking for it and there are many way one can tell the other the disadvantages of a certain choice make by TS politely.

Anyway, since TS had weigh the pros and the cons, he/she should just try to apply else you never know. Important thing is you got plan B if things goes south.

Good luck.

I hope this inspires you as most of the researchers i encounter (master student, phd student, uni lecturers) are humble, willing to share and help.

With that kind of score, I think should be no problem. Which uni is your choice?

Pure Science is for Genius? Not really, as long as you like the subject, you don't have to be a genius.

If you’re truly passionate.
One of the most optimal path would be.
1. Do your undergrad studies in a local uni. Make sure you do very well.
2. Apply for PhD programs in a better uni overseas. Could be the US, Singapore or even China.
3. Complete the PhD and then decide to stay in academia or enter the industry.

Without a PhD, career choices in Malaysia is very limited.
So this path will take at least 8 years to be even remotely fruitful. Are you sure you want to take this path ?
