I'm looking ahead for a possible replacement (well my current laptop is since 2014, so its already showing its age), but I don't think one can get good value 17" laptops these days.

Here are some of those i've noticed and scoured around (at least for Malaysian markets) these are what are available:

Illegear Rogue

Virtual Reality (VR) Ready
3.1kg with Battery and 2.5" Storage Drive
419(W) x 284(D) x 32.2(H) mm

starts at 4,099

17.3″ FHD 144Hz IPS sRGB 100% Display featuring INFINIVISION Bezel-less Technology

1x USB Type-C, 1x HDMI 2.0, 2x Mini Displayport 1.4
2x M.2 PCIe SSD slots, 1x 2.5" SATA slot
17.3" Display in 15.6" Bezel-less Form Factor
Virtual Reality (VR) Ready
2.25kg with Battery and 2.5" Storage Drive
395(L) x 260(W) x 25(H) mm

Starts at 7399

All of the Illegear models above, does not have any room for CPU and GPU upgrade. RAM, HDD are "upgradeable".

However, if you look at the GPU and CPU specs, its nothing really to shout about. Especially when you have say 2070 on Optimus. Also, not to mention there isn't any indicator if they're full fledged GPUs or under the M (mobile) or even worse Max-Q moniker. That is also another consideration.

The one with changeable CPU and GPU, is the Illegear D7X here
Illegear D7X
17.3" Full HD Anti-glare 144Hz IPS Display with sRGB 100% Wide Color & Wide View (G-Sync)
Intel® Z370 Express Chipset
9th Generation Intel® Core™ i5 / i7 / i9 Desktop Processor
Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060 6GB / RTX 2070 8GB / RTX 2080 8GB
Up to 64GB Dual Channel DDR4 RAM
Multi-color Programmable Backlit Keyboard with Individual Macro Keys
SoundBlasterX® Pro-Gaming 360°
Two Built-in Speakers & One Subwoofer
Windows 10 64-Bit Edition
Killer DoubleShot™ Pro
Full HD Webcam and Built-in Microphone
Li-Ion 82Wh Battery
2x USB 3.1 Gen 2 Combo Port (Type-C) (1x Hybrid Thunderbolt™ 3)
Smart Charging and Integrated Area Fingerprint Reader
Dual Boost 7-Heatpipe Interbridge and Virtual Reality (VR) Ready
ESS™ SABRE HiFi DAC for high resolution headphone audio
3.9kg with Battery and 2.5" Storage Drive
418(W) x 295.3(D) x 40.9(H) mm

but you can already see where i'm about to go; the price point, and its only a 2060. Jump to a 2070 with the same spec as above, and you'll see the price jumps to RM11.4k, and that's not yet looking into warranties, care package, other upgrades.

Alienware has 2 17" offerings (at least Alienware, not other Dell laptops)
at Alienware M17 .
This fella commands RM8k, but comes with RTX2080 Max-Q (which.... i'll just basically say its less than desktop 1080, probably desktop 1070) because the RTX2070 mobile (not sure of the supposed "full card") is only on par with a desktop 1080, but at a whooping price premium that's very difficult to justify).

The other one is this Alienware 17 but then again, the proc is a H (means mobile) and uses a GTX 1070 OC (which I can't identify whether its the Max-Q line up, the "mobile", or the "desktop-in-mobile" form (because yes, there are different variations). I doubt that its anything like the Dell's own swappable discrete GPU model (not to be confused with the external GPU adapter).

But oh well.... sigh.
Ludwig.

i don't quite understand 17' laptops that are marketed as "thin and light".
the form-factor would only be attractive as a desktop replacement hmm.gif

Your post too long, will read up later. What about this one below got 32GB ram? As for pros and cons, have to ask ZM Fong.

And also use this link as reference.

Also Level51 but the site seem to be changing alot recently. Not sure about final 17inch models available if you compare to Aftershock recent changes.

Also Tech Armory, the TIGER 7 Ver.19-A 17inch model seem to delay to mid May availability from mid April.

More 17inch models and brands might be coming soon - word is really sarcastic especially for MY market.

Might really see some 17inch models with ryzen/nvidia combos hopefully.

Pipu want to carry to work and home. But mostly the laptop stay at one location only. Eg movement limited to inside the house between living room and bedroom mostly.

It's a Clevo P775. Very special product since CPU and GPU can be upgraded and you can do a lot of modding with it. Price also high, therefore demand is small. Why they don't offer 2 yr warranty for this model, idk

Ryzen + Nvidia combos will be interesting, but if the Ryzen + AMD combos can deliver similar results with far lesser price, its a no brainer for me, i'm willing to go for it.

ZM Fong correctly pointed that its the Clevo P775. Its old, but very reliable, sturdy, and quite amazing.

add on:

I don't think that adding a new post would be beneficial, but just to continue the discussion (because i'm very interested in 17" laptops because I own an Illegear RS15 (because the RS-17 was out of reach / out of stock I forgot back then).

Acer Predator Helios 500 This is the supposedly only configuration available in Malaysia. Yes its dated, but the original setup allows setups such as full AMD, Ryzen + Nvidia, Intel + NVidia or Intel + AMD.

On the other hand, the one laptop that I was really anticipating about has launched.
The Alienware Area 51m A truest desktop-replacement in both construction and design. If it delivers what it promises, the price tag is something I can live by. You know it when NOTEBOOKCHECK puts the wording "Clevo Killer" before everything else. It speaks volumes.

The other laptop that turned my head, is the ASUS ROG Mothership At first I was very skeptical, but the Linus' fiddling and unboxing of it (as in literally, dismantling of it) in CES showing the innards convinced me that the Asus engineers really brute-forced the cooling on this one to make it actually work.

All 3 above? Price unknown.

The pricetag the worrying factor when that dell model reaches our shore.

Wow good find with the Triton 900. If the GPU and CPU isn't gimped (hopefully it isn't) I think it is a great device. A contender to the Asus ROG Mothership.

At least to my understanding, from example this article from Tom's Hardwware, it shows that there is such. But to say that they're in our market, probably not because the one I posted was ACER MY. Maybe our market is too small / saturated.

It seem ryzen version price lower compare to intel. Hopefully more ryzen laptops appearing on our shores and more options for us to choose from. smile.gif

So Razer released / refreshed their lineup for 2019, and a 17" model appears! The cooling looks great.

Price? Not sure.
