BANGI: A budget guide unveiled by the government today revealed that a single person needs to earn at least RM1,870 a month to “achieve a reasonable standard of living” in the Klang Valley.

While this is higher than the minimum wage of RM1,100 per month, it still falls short of estimates by economists.

Prof Tan Sri Dr Noor Azlan Ghazali and Prof Dr Barjoyai Bardai said the official estimates for couples, with or without children, were more realistic. But for singles, the figures should be RM2,300 to RM2,500.

Noor Azlan pointed out that a person spends 65% of his income on food, accommodation and transport and if he earned RM1,870, that would come up to RM1,200.

“That is not enough,“ he said.

Barjoyai said RM1,870 a month could be enough for someone living outside the Klang Valley.

The data, contained in the “BelanjawanKu: Expenditure Guide for Malaysians” programme launched by Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng today, shows that a family needs RM2,490 to RM6,620 per month, depending on the number of children they have and whether they are retired.

The guide, that focuses on individuals and families who live in the Klang Valley, covers costs for basic necessities, social activities, recommended savings, loan repayments and emergencies.

A single who owns a car will see his monthly expenditure rise to RM2,490 while for the elderly, a substantial amount of savings or a fairly large pension is essential as their expenditures could amount to RM3,090 per month.

BelanjawanKu was commissioned by the Employees Provident Fund (EPF) and the research was carried out by the Social Wellbeing Research Centre of Universiti Malaya.

Apart from surveys of household expenditure and prices of goods and services, the exercise also involved focused group discussions with academicians and representatives of stakeholders.

Lim said the guide was vital to help Malaysians understand their purchasing power and how not to get caught in major financial problems.

A 2014 study by S&P Global Literacy Financial found that Malaysians’ grasp of financial knowledge stood at only 36% compared with 59% in developed countries.

“This has contributed to high debt rates among Malaysians and a worrying number of bankrupts among youth. From 2013 to 2017, a total of 100,619 Malaysians were declared bankrupt, 60% of whom were aged 18 to 44,“ Lim said.

He also pointed out that active EPF contributors aged 54 had only RM214,000 each in savings. The fund’s recommended quantum is RM240,000.

Of greater concern is the fact that two-thirds of those aged 54 had only RM50,000 or less in EPF savings.

agreed

now this thread talking about minimum wages

should focus on "surviving" in kl, instead of "car owner", and "saving".

minimum mean bottom of bottom already, mean worst of worst.

“achieve a reasonable standard of living” <-- i dun think the malaysia sudah sampai the level that minimum wages can get a reasonable standard of living, maybe possible in kampung / small town area la, maybe.

that article seems like want minimum wages at least can get a reasonable standard of living in kl.

if like that then it mean high wages outside of city already, yes author very kind think of the worker but how the business owner lol, later all small business close business.

even that time implementation of gst already many small business close down

but TBH, spending 1k on monthly expenses without any entertainment/socialism, Im still pretty satisfy with it la. becoz i gamer keep stay in room 1 hahaha

Savings, personal care, utilities and housing too low.
Haircut once is 30-50 already, how about internet?
300 for rental is far too low even.

This is the mistakes of politicians who keeps saying devaluation is good for the export market and brings income for the nation, it is the people who suffer.

1. Stay single, don’t breed, don’t give money to parents.
2. Rent small room within walking distance to work, room only for bed and shower.
3. Don’t have friends, don’t go out, don’t buy car.
4. Save money like crazy and invest in investments with at least 5% interest PA.
5. Retire with passive income generated from compounding interests.

Haircut around 30 and up, 10 is quite difficult nowadays, plus shampoo and other detergent and stuff still not sufficient amount.
You also agree utilities is too little.

We agree that this is barely survivable amount, but definitely need to be higher.

Granted that average wage in Taiwan is also around 3k MYR, their bills and living cost is much higher than us...

Not sure why they assume they are going to earn minimum wages forever? Even after 30 years? Maybe some people really deserve only minimum wages?

With that amount of savings, very likely difficult to change life situation already.
And all of these actually assumes that there is no debt, how about student debt?
Better look for easy solution as soon as possible rather than long term stress.

MINIMUM WAGES earners - If they earn RM 1.1 k or less they should have no student debt, most likely SPM dropout. If they think they deserved better pay, look for better offer, change job. Not simply ask govt to increase their wages.

breakfast I eat bread,

bread RM3.20, I eat half only.

Breakfast
Monday - Friday : RM1.60 daily (sometime got eat, sometime no eat)
Saturday & Sunday : at home no eat breakfast, coz always sleep til 11am, wait 2 hours then lunch time edi.

Lunch
Monday - Friday : RM6.00, nasi campur kedai Melayu, 1 chicken 1 sayur. sometime got go out eat at chinese food caurt, RM7.50 then, but rarely go out.
Saturday & Sunday : RM8.00 - RM9.00, nasi campur kedai Cina, same 1 meat 1 sayur.

Dinner
Everyday : RM4.00 - RM 5.00, nasi campur kedai Cina (it's cheap bcoz night discount price coz going close shop) 6PM discount 10% / 7PM 20% / 8PM 30%, although stated like this but it usually discount more than that. I usually tapao during 7pm time.

My motorcycle petrol cost
RM6.00 can last 3 working days, daily travel 20km.
Saturday & Sunday barely use, the location kedai nasi campur very very close to my living place. like 1km only.

I have no demand on food quality/taste, I can always eat the same thing. as long as did not taste bad.
I have no entertainment/social, play games at home.
Few years ago I already bought a hair cutter for arounf RM50, been cut botak myself since then.
Shampoo and etc, I always choose the cheap one to use, like guardian brand is is cheap and good.
tooth paste i use slight expensive one, Darlie, but 1 paste can use superb long time, buy a few when got discount.

My expenses are quite similar to you, but I have a car and a girlfriend. And when you have a girlfriend you cant afford to spend like that, else you are better off without one.

Food: My budget is about RM10 per day (personal spending only, if eat out with GF confirm tak cukup). Breakfast I will usually limit my budget to RM2 or even just drink milo at office pantry. Ping Pong biscuit only RM3.75 for 1 pack, easily can last you one week. Lunch eat out zapfan RM7-8 for my portion. Staying at home so sometimes eat at home sometimes eat outside. RM10 is a bit hard if you are staying outside, RM15 is a better gauge.

Housing: No need to pay rental since staying with family, so instead give parents RM500.

Motorcycle: RM5 for 3 days, about RM40 per month. If i take LRT to work that is around RM100 for unlimited pass and petrol fee to the LRT station.

Car Loan: A bit high but no choice, no girl wants to sit motorcycle with you. RM600 per month. Petrol maybe RM50-100 per month since only use for outing.

Mobile Plan: Rm30 plan can get you a lot nowadays.

Force saving: RM500

Total around RM2000.

I think if you are single and you know how to ride bike in Klang Valley, you really can save a lot.

1k not enough?...

even Indon people living in the city around that wage can survive and even make a youtube video about it....

Look at your necessity and expenses. Else, please go live in the outskirt and don't work in the city.

This is everywhere in the world. It is call live within your means.

mana2 also same these days, even for so called first world nations.

https://www.reddit.com/r/LateStageCapitalism/

over at US, rents are exorbitant, forced to stay with parents, others not so lucky. You can die if you cant afford insulin and etc, homelessness rising yearly, trump doesn't give a fuck.

you can survive today but you won't know what will happen tomorrow

breakfast I eat bread,

bread RM3.20, I eat half only.

Shampoo and etc, I always choose the cheap one to use, like guardian brand is is cheap and good.
tooth paste i use slight expensive one, Darlie, but 1 paste can use superb long time, buy a few when got discount.

total per mth is still more then 450RM
*
take this month as example

21 working days, 10 non-working days

breakfast
let's say if i eat breakfast every working day
21 * 1.6 = 33.6

lunch
if 17 days eat in canteen and 4 days eat outside
17*6=102
4*7.5=30
sat & sun = 10 * 8.5 = 85

dinner
31*4.5 =139.5

petrol = (21/3)*6 = 42

total = 33.6 + 102 + 30 + 85 + 139.5 + 42 = 432.1

how exceed 500 incl petrol above? already have extra room for sometime buy snacks.
