Hi everyone,

Today I would like share info on enabling smooth 4K Youtube Playback on Chrome browsers, I know most of you have high-speed internet connection but when you try to play 4K videos in youtube using the Chrome browsers the video stutters or lags a lot. The solution to this problem is to enable the GPU video decoding in your Chrome browser.

Steps:
1. First, go to advanced settings of your chrome browser and enable hardware acceleration. After that exit and reopen your chrome browser.

user posted image

2. After that to verify whether are your chrome browser is using GPU video decoding or not, type chrome://gpu in the address bar of your chrome browser and you should see like shown in the pictures below.

And in the video acceleration information section you should see this:

3. And now try playing 4K youtube videos and you should get smooth playback without stutters or lags.

Thank you.

i use firefox and 4k play is smooth.
the only thing that i concern were downscaling 4k to a small windows is a bitch (the downscaling aliasing is obvious), so I keep on using 1080p settings.

No problem. I believe Riva tnt2 32mb with opengl is not powerful enough to decode 720p/1080p or 4K videos

So basically just turn on hardware acceleration?
The chrome://gpu serve any purpose other than confirming videos are decoded using hardware?

chrome://gpu shows all the info that the chrome browser is getting from the GPU such as what features it supports.

Quick note, this will not really give you smooth playback is your gpu doesn't support VP9 Hardware decoding(playback) (Unless you only watching AVC encoded youtube vieos tongue.gif)

ironically AVC give better quality thanks to higher bitrate.

Yup, Google introduced VP9 video codec to save internet bandwidth that are used by video streaming services.

Higher bitrate doesn't means better quality, VP9 supposed to be 40% more efficient than AVC. But compared to AVC, VP9 doesn't have a optimized encoder, the vp9 reference encoder(libvpx-vp9 )is really slow, and have a bad Psycho-visual optimization. There is one company keep bragging brows.gif brows.gif about they what so called 'The world's best VP9 encoder' to consumer but its just a commercial video encoder.

Anyway let's hope the same thing didnt happend to AOMedia Video 1 Codec(AV1) drool.gif

Dont worry couple more year youtube will change to AV1 completely whistling.gif whistling.gif (Currently they started encode most popular video with AV1 Codec (Probably with the crappy reference encoder(libaom)Currently*, for resolution 720p and lower, the codec still in testting tho)

but youtube decision to use vp9 were to save bandwidth, not to provide better video quality lol.
but for 4k, yeah vp9 is a needed evil.

YouTube already stop encoding 4k video with AVC since more than couple of years ago.

All the newly encoded video with resolution higher than full HD are done with VP9 since then.

When AV1 encoding is mature enough (it is still slow now) , most likely all the video beyond 4k will be encoded with AV1 only (of course there will be AV1 versions too for those with lower resolution) .

Mozilla is one of the founding members of the organisation, and it contributed some new tools in the codec.

Heard that the most optimistic schedule for a chip supporting AV1 hardware decoding to be in the market is by end of this year.

Judging by the members of the alliance, especially those content providers (Google, netflix, amazon, Facebook, iqiyi, alibaba), the adoption of AV should be faster compared to VP9.

Agree, currently xiph and other is developing much more optimized and better AV1 encoder called rav1e, let see what happend once development is done drool.gif drool.gif

Maybe?, AV1 is about 40% more efficient than VP9 and about 20-30% more efficient than X265(HEVC)
it has larger block, more prediction direction, and new feature like Chroma from luma prediction, film grain synthesis, etc. Also its royalty free!!! icon_idea.gif icon_idea.gif

and content provider will just use lower bitrate settings and those new codec requires twice compute power to decode/encode and we are needing new hardware for hardware decoder/encoder.
to my eye, implementing new codec benefits cooperation more, as for consumer, it helps people who dont have fast enough internet connection

Agree, for right now we need to use software decoding, videolan is in development for a optimized av1 decoder called dav1d
Here some performance test people did with the reference decoder and with dav1d https://www.reddit.com/r/AV1/comments/aqzqf...mance_20190215/

Looking forward for the AV1 video codec, and I think hardware supporting AV1 decoding will be released around next year.
