Messi is probably the best free kick taker now, he has scored like 8 this season. 8 goals per season for someone who doesn't offer anything else, you can't justify that.
You have understood 'unlocking' defense wrong if you count free-kick as a method to do so. Free-kick goals would always only be a bonus and not something to count on consistently.
