My friend is a cardiac doctor in pantai hospital. He is one of the most famous and the busiest there. Managed to catch up with him during cny.

He kept ranting to me that his life is all about work work and work. It is his wife and children to help him spend the money. But he said he cannot stop working as there are too many patients need him.

He sometimes feels he is just a robot. Money is meaningless to him.

I wonder, is he considered successful in life?

Lain org lain cita cita, ada org nak kutip sampah, botol recycle, pastu boleh pilih nak buat apa asal ada makanan untuk hidup esok hari dah cukup. Successful in life in very subjective as different people have different aim.

As for your friend case dia nampak successful pada mata orang yang takda duit, tapi tak successful mata orang yang banyak masa. At the end of the day u decide whether u success or not, not by taking people opinion.

success required sacrifice... in his scenario... no quality time spend (for family/friends etc) in fact no time at all
so what define success for u?

Really meh?

Thought can reject patient one.

I last time line up so long for 4 blady hours just so that the doctor can charge me blady RM 400 and talk to me for only 10 minutes while he juggle back and forth to another room and talk to another patient.

I know a cardio consultant, his life so gooding until he has so much time to run religious classes with youth and read book in between patients.

Depend on doc depend on field.
Some more relaxed than other.
But of course the more u work the more u earn. Everyone diff need and priority.
Like me I don't take chronic cases. Why because I don't wanna be tied to my practice because of pts that cannot be cured and need recurrent visits.
Some docs love pts like this because confirm constant consultation charges.
so up to the doc la. Want more money or more time.

i know a dr who make ard 100-200K per month..he is enjoying his life though. He is one of the famous dr in his field. Now semi-retired. Got plenty of properties and always go to makan2 nice things. Got lot of VIP gathering, family gathering..and sometimes belanja me makan good thing as well.
Ya the letdown is sometimes he have to be 'on-call' dr for his hospital. Ya, all dr have schedule to follow..even those with Dato's title.
And maybe sometimes he is bz coz got few big surgery..

its a choice.

I can almost triple my current salary by moving to work in another country. But I would have to stay in a small condo, and my family will be stuck with me in a kiasu place... so i didnt move.

Pity doctor actually. Too much work, too little time.
Empty life, sometimes the only happiness they find are in the face of thankful patient.
Overworked, over-stressed and overstretched.

Only select few can attain that level. This is true for almost every other professions out there. Though on average doctor earn more, their stress level also is >9000z

Raffles Hospital in Singapore a surgeon earns $10-$15k per operation, at times they do 2-3 surgeries per day, you should try and go to the staff parking and have a look at the cars the doctors use to come to work.

It's like a candle. You burn yourself to lighten the others.

In the end what you get? A bunch of molten wax stuck on the floor and a dead self.

Lots of money, yes.
But sadly can't buy time.

When younger, want more money, don't care, I want OT, go work sahaja.
Older d, sometimes rather not work to spend time with family.
True for me.

success is subject to personal preference

for me success is as long as no need salaried, passive income/investment enough to cover lifetime expenses for a normal lifestyle (no need luxurious) like:

drive used car below 100k
travel overseas once a year
basic landed house or decent apartment
normal food, can eat at good restaurants once or twice a month

settle
