Hi LYN pals,

I am planing to trade in my 4.5 years Ford Kuga around April. I am currently debating between CX5 GLS 2.0 or Mazda 6 2.0.

I noticed there are more CX5 on the road, and I wish to know what makes the owner choose CX5 over Mazda 6.

Price diff, approx RM10,000 +-


Correct me if I am wrong, these are what I think.

CX5:

Taller, Wider viewing angle, Easy to drive




Mazda 6

CBU, bigger interior space, stability

It's more like most people follow the current SUV trends.

Also, SUV has tailgate advantage (can masuk bicycle easy), better river fording abilities (floods), less bumper damage from falling into pothole/going over a speedbump too fast.

The sedan drives much better though (more sporty, less boaty)

There are probably some minor spec differences too.

Why foregoing Kuga?

Apart from SUV being the rage, CX5 being CKD (assembled in Malaysia) is also more affordable in terms of pricing and perhaps even parts hence more popular that the fully imported 6.

SUV by nature would also be favoured in Malaysia due to the freaking road conditions that is pot hole prone, flash flood prone, etc.

If you want the best of both world perhaps CX8?

Because i was so "ong" with my Kuga...The global overheating problem has occurred to me twice! Each time required 1.5 months - 2 months warranty replacement from the workshop. Although this round they are replacing the entire system with new temperature monitor, I no longer in love with the car.
PLUS, i change car every 5 years upon completion of loan installment.

Oh I see...That is the way to go, wish I can do the same, every 5 years change car.

Judging from such capability of yours, you must be more Ong than yours truly:....good for you (envy)

I knew quite a fair bit of friends who change car everytime they complete their loan installment. Isn't that common?

I choose CX5 because I like mid size car, taller view, I been driving suv for 10 years. Flash flood also one of the reason. I already used to driving/cornering with SUV (not as stable as sedan car).
Also wife prefer SUV to sedan
Basically these are the reasons why I choose cx5.

I test drive a Forester in December. I didn't like quite like the handling. Do they have any uplift in 2019?

its weird ppl didnt like forester handling over anything...

i think there is updated 2019 model..not sure in yet or not

Personal opinion, I felt Kuga's handling was better and most importantly much better soundproof. Soundproof is Very important to me, I find peace in absolute silence. No music no wind sound.

Have you test driven both the cx5 and the mazda6?

Mazda is not well known for soundproofing (which you prioritise highly), although new generation cx5 and facelifted mazda6 did some noticeable improvements.

If not, you'll need to look at the european marques (namely the vw passat) or the really outside the box car, the new camry (great handling, even mazda say this car is their new bencmark; and very good sound proofing (local review says better than c200); lastly being a toyota, fantastic reliability).

If you looking at soundproof, then can forget cx5.
The current hilux road noise's sound proof is better than cx5. I mean driving below 100km/h.
I think price around 160k car, hardly can find a good sound proof car. Maybe VW passat? But I myself wont consider VW at all.

Coming from suv, I suggest u mazda cx5.


That is good yo, just yesterday test drive proton x70. Even with 19inch wheel, cornering is weaker than my accord 2.4 yo. I cannot imagine how people can drive suv so fast during cornering.Maybe they use to it. I kecut bola already. But viewing so nice. Can see beside people what they do. Rofl.

Not many will take 5 years loan I will say, most will stretch until 7 even 9 years

I have test driven a CX5, but not Mazda6. I feel significant improvement from the last vers. I won't consider VW as i face major 2nd hand value lost on Kuga (lost 100+k), and trying to avoid major losses on my next car.

I noticed the new Camry, will go for a test drive. Thanks for recommending.

You are right. Thus looking at best among Japanese.

I chose Cx5 since it's an suv. I drove an fd before and shifting to an suv makes a huge difference for me. I enjoy the viewing angle, higher ride which is an advantage for me and its looks.

Comfort wise, its a major step up for me. The ride is quiet enough although mine runs on 19 inch wheels and comes with diesel engine. At highway speed, the road noise and engine sound can be heard but it's not an issue for me. (far better than my previous car)

SUV = Slow & Ugly Vehicle. So pick the sedan!
Just joking, but seriously, don't buy any of them! If want to buy, get the 2.5ltr version. Otherwise just get the smaller CX3 or Mazda 3.

Its a personal choice. If 7-9 years loan, I can probably get a entry level German-made. But i choose 5 years with range at 160k-170k

what would be your recommendation for budget at 160-170k

Mazda also don't hold their value as well compard to honda/toyota, but still better than vw/ford/koreans.

The new camry could be a little hard to book for test drive as the numbers are very limited due to CBU 1st batch run in our markets. But, i could be wrong, drop by a few toyota showrooms for further queries.

Another unlikely recommendation would be the kia optima gt. Yes, i know it doesn't live up to the resale value after 5 years, but just give it a good test ride to have a good gauge where the competitions are standing.

Then maybe Accord 2.4.

I was in a similar situation, was debating between a Mazda CX-5, Kia Sportage, Kia Sorento, VW Tiguan and Peugeot 3008 or to go for a Mazda6 2.2 estate.

The Tiguan was the first to be crossed out as I wasn't too keen on downsized turbo engines especially one made by VW.

The next to get crossed out was the Peugeot. We loved the car but felt it was too funky and we did not like that small steering wheel.

The next to get crossed out was the Kia Sorento, nice SUV, refinement would put many BMWs and MBs to shame. Ultimately my missus did not like it as it was too big a car for us and we were not keen on things like chromed 19" wheels and self parking features. Also the good one was the diesel and it was quite pricey.

Then came the Mazda6, we were going to buy a 2nd hand one. Reason we did not go for it? It felt too tight on space and ultimately it felt a bit dated.

Then we looked at the Mazda CX-5, first to go off the list were the petrol models. 2.5l was too thirsty and 2.0l felt underpowered. We tested the CX-5 2.2 FWD extensively as one was loaned to us, ultimately we said no to it because of the torque steer.

Finally it came down to it, CX5 2.2 AWD or a Kia Sportage 2.0d AWD. We took the Sportage because it was RM27k cheaper, free maintenance for 3 years and in the event EuroV diesel was unavailable you don't risk anything pumping our usual diesel. We also weren't that keen on a CKD car.



You will miss the superior handling of the Kuga when you get into a CX-5.

You are shopping for the wrong marque if sound proofing is something you value. Mazdas have crap sound proofing.

All cars will lose value these days, no such thing as a car with good resale value anymore.

If soundproofing is your concern, the Proton X70 has better soundproofing than a mercedes SUV
