Can. Why not. I'm using it for my Z97 Pro Gamer board as well. But my adaptor has a built in fan to cool the SSD.

No need so paranoid, plenty of gamers using m.2 SSD which is directly below their GPU and it still doing fine.

Just get a thick heatsink like this to help dissipate the heat

Wanna ask the sifus here, I have a MSI z97a gaming 6, there's a dedicated M.2 Gen 2 slot onboard. In the msi webpage there's a list compatible ssd but mostly older & smaller capacity ones. I'm aiming for 500GB or 1TB to use as main drive.

Is it possible for me to use a newer ssd that's not mentioned in the list? Like a 860 evo or kingston A1000

Latest bios is 2016 sweat.gif

Theoretically should be able I guess. Just that you'll be limited to x2 speed instead of the SSD x4 speed.

So other than the speed bottleneck, will there be any other issues?

most of the time there will be no issue, also the the one you chosen, 1TB 2280 is m.2 SATA SSD, it's limited by SATA protocol, not your mobo limitation.
NVME PCIE will have much higher throughput.

My current PC now only have 1 Western digital 240gb sata that is almost out of space. I want to buy a 500gb sdd now which should I buy and is there anymore slots for it in my motherboard?

My motherboard is a asus h310m-k and my room is very hot in the day time...

you should get another HDD for your needs, and SSD is much expensive per GB.
Your mobo has 4 SATA ports but can be expanded via HBA adapter, eg https://www.amazon.com/stores/node/25298170..._web_2529817011

consumer hdd are slow, but they're cheap.
Yeah, you still can add 3 more SATA drives, another cheaper way is add USB HDD, or NAS.

Sorry for the noobness, I still don't really understand. Went to Digital Mall last nite & asked around, some ppl say can use, some say cannot. Just to be safe should I just stick to a normal SATA SSD then?

copied from MSI, your mobo support
QUOTE
"1 x 2280 Key M(PCIe Gen2 x2/SATA)"

Kingston website
QUOTE
"Motherboards using the recently released Intel z97 and AMD FX 990 chipsets support M.2 SATA and PCIe SSDs. In addition, there are numerous notebooks already supporting the M.2 SSD. Please consult your system specifications and user manual to check for compatibility before purchasing an M.2 SSD."
for me i wouldn't stick with SATA i have more spare cash.

your safest choice is the old SATA, PCIE SSD (mostly in half high half length, aka HHHL), or nvme SSD with pcie adapter,
with the later your m.2 ssd will not be bottlenecked by the old PCIEx2 interface on your mobo.
for example from Silverstone:

WAIT BUT THERE'S MORE doh.gif
the booting problem, i'm not even sure if your mobo support booting from pcie ssd with adapter, ect.
here, have some good read https://www.google.com.sg/search?client=ope...=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8 sweat.gif
