once in a lifetime..ok...

but proper planning, way cheaper...

1. hotel, stay at airbnb or homestays..

30-50% of your hotel price.

or save for accomodation...work for them in exchange of .. https://www.workaway.info/

2. not so pricey...especially buy in wet market in japan...not in restaurant..

3. transport...buy day or weekly...transit card.

Ok la, OP travel business class via SQ so I think he already set the expectations and want a good sleep.
I was expecting a lot more expense on the hotels but to each his own.

We went to buy waterproof hiking shoes at Decathlon SG. Mine is this one (it was on discount so I paid like 30 or 40sgd, can't remember how much exactly): https://www.decathlon.sg/p/8383618-73175-fo...272-uk_55_eu_39

I know that decathlon opened in Malaysia liao, but not too sure how well stocked they are. https://www.decathlon.my/

A note also that it depends what you plan to do in the snowy places. For walking in cities and towns that have regular snow removal, these kinds of cheap waterproof hiking shoes more than good enough, don't even need to worry about low cut / high cut. But if you plan to go hiking for a long time in more than a few inches of snow, then need to plan properly cos otherwise snow can quite easily get into the top and then melt and freeze your feet.

so the shoes you wore were really waterproof?....and you wore the same shoes in tokyo also?

Yes, waterproof as long as the snow doesn't get in from the ankles.
Yes, I also wore the same shoes in Tokyo.
They weren't really that comfortable for walking around, but I didn't really want to pack so many pairs of shoes (the ski jacket etc all take up quite a lot of space).

Day 5-8: Myoko Kogen (Akakura Onsen) Ski'ing continued ...

Last update for the Ski'ing part of the trip. Wife and I didn't feel like going out again in the cold winter for dinner after onsen, so we opted for half board (i.e. breakfast and dinner) at the ryokan/hotel.

user posted image user posted image user posted image user posted image user posted image user posted image

p.s. Hotel name was Kotobukiro. Family run, a little on the pricey side perhaps but service was very good and homely, and food was pretty good. We were also the only guests in the hotel so my wife and I used the same onsen throughout the trip, which was a nice surprise.

Day 5-8: Myoko Kogen (Akakura Onsen) Ski'ing continued ...

After the last day of ski'ing, we taxi'ed / train'ed / shinkansen'ed back to Tokyo, and by sheer luck saw a nice Mt Fuji silhoutte.

Day 5-8: Myoko Kogen (Akakura Onsen) Ski'ing continued ...

So on day 8 after we reached Tokyo we decided to go for some yakitori. Ended up visiting Birdland Ginza which supposedly has 1michelin star.

Most of the restaurant is counter seating surrounding the main charcoal grill so you can watch the chef cook up your chicken.

spycam Huawei p20pro night mode 🤣
I used to travel with my DSLRs, lenses and flashes but lately been really super lazy, cos phone pics are good enough in 80-90% of scenarios (cos my pics just use to upload FB and forums saja anyway).

got any pics of the ryokans (the room, toilet, interior side)?

I dare not try ryokans. Just want to see is it not too bad?

I always opt for normal hotels in japan.

The flight time is way shorter (flight is therefore also cheaper), and there's only 1hr time diff so you don't need to worry about jetlag.

No comment about price though, never skiied in the americas before so can't compare.
