Hi all,

I'll need to replace the tyres on my CX-5 soon, and I'm planning to replace with a lower tyre, either 225/55R17 or 225/45R17 as the rear of the car constantly feels unstable and I also find the 225/65R17 tyres a little too tall and out of proportion

What tyre would be recommended for these sizes? I'm currently using the Michelin Primacy SUV which is acceptable but can be quite hard and noisy at times and is not available for the sizes I want.

Thanks.

You should not simply downsize to lower profile tires without changing rim size because the overall outer diameter will be reduced too much and hence your ride height drop and fender gaps will increase by the same.

For example if you just use 225/55/17, then your sidewall height will drop by 2.3cm so the ride height will also drop by the same and you will have extra 2.3cm gap between the tires and fenders, making it look ugly. So if you want to use 225/55 tires then you need to upsize the rims to 19' to compensate for the loss of 2.3cm height so the overall outer diameter will be about the same (just a few mm difference), so the tire size should be 225/55/19. Doing such conversion though will be very costly coz bigger diameter tires and rims, especially when reaching 19' is a huge jump in prices.
