Friend of mine is selling his 2015 Beetle to me. Mileage is very low around 40k only. All services were done on time.
Last month he encountered some problem with the left side mirror, dont know what the issue was but probably something wrong with its motor. So he sent his car to VW Balakong. Checked but the SC said nothing is wrong so he just drove away.

Now, that was when more issues started to come.

During his drive back from the VW he noticed ESP light came out. He went back to VW but they cannot check straight away but gave him an appointment date which is in March instead!

After several days, check engine light came out. In this past few days, EPC light came out, ABS light, Steering light.

1. Will VW SC know if I go and check the fault code outside workshop? Will it void the warranty?
2. Is there such a thing as false warning light? Because according to him when he went to check the side mirror at VW, they plugged in OBD2 so probably the entire system went cuckoo for some reason? Idk, just thinking of possibilities.

Appreciate all your opinions. Thanks

Yes, check the battery first. A lot of modern cars nowadays when battery level low, the dash will light on lots of warning lights.

BTW, if outside mechanic only help check fault codes and did not remap or flash ECU. The warranty will not impact any as original ECU setting is still the same.

Lol 😂 common sense.....

“ VW cares “ das auto

I would suggest OP go to VW service center and talk to the owners sitting and see how long the rectification and troubleshooting back log is.... 🤭 see how many pissed owners u can chat up....

Get it checked at a vw specialist. It could be just a speed sensor issue.

if have group of owners, better join and ask for opinions...then you will know the pros and cons so you can judge whether you are willing to take the risk of ownership or not. All cars have its issues...is just the matter of are you willing to take the risk or not...

Sounds like in the beginning even the sc could not diagnose the issue and it caused the original owner some frustration, hence the idea of selling it. Feels like a good buy. Vw cars are more common and down to earth than its luxurious siblings (Porsche, Audi, .....) . If more experienced guys , they would have bought this car from the owner and check system one by one. Usually just small part to replace/ repair.

Usually would have started with obd, then check if any sensors having issue. Sometimes sensors are at their end of life they might work 50% of the time, hence undetected during service. I also would have checked battery, alternator. But less than 40k on the odo seem to be a good one. Let me know if he still think about selling.

Veedubs golf R and CBU from Germany are great... launch like a mad dragger from hell and drives like a video game... the rest.... even my own friends 🤦🏻‍♂️ Say avoid like the plague....
Just sharing.... but end of the day for the price only this car has the Porsche lines... which some are willing to sacrifice the inconvenience for....
I totally understand I used to be in this shoe 👟 category once upon a time.

The main issues for this car would be the engine and dsg 7spd mechatronic. As for speed sensor issue, its quite common and can be cheaply replaced at 3rd party workshops after warranty period (OEM's version is <RM100 excl workmanship iinm). Please also factor in the major service which falls on the 4th year / 60k km. I would strongly suggest the 2.0 tsi if you fancy a beetle.

New mecha unit would set you back about RM7.5k. Recon ones probably about RM2k. As for 1.2 engine, I'm not sure what issues they have and how much it is for a full overhaul. Best to join beetle club to ask.
