Hello,
So I've recently changed my Myvi's front tyres and the steering wheel felt loose after that. Went and did alignment and it's back to normal stiffness.
However, my friend tried driving my car before and he asked why is the steering wheel stiff compared to his own Myvi.
I've also driven Estima, Camry and BMW 5 series (all several thousand kilometres driven, not test drive) before and never noticed the difference in steering wheel stiffness, so I can assume all of them had similar stiffness.
May I know how stiff or loose are steering wheels suppose to be? Should I advise my friend that maybe his car's steering wheel is suppose to be stiffer?
Please advise. Thank you.
Which gen of Myvi? 1/2 or 3? Anyway, if you had driven a 5 series and did not notice the difference in steering feel, I think it's safe to save you're not a car person lol.
Each manufacturers target different market/kind of drivers and hence different steering setup. Generally, hydraulic powered steering feels much heavier and more "mechanical". It has more feedback from the road surface. Some people like it some do not. Cars nowadays have moved on to electric powered steering. Now this is where the setup can change drastically from one brand or even specific model, to another. I noticed Japanese cars (except Mazda) tend to be much lighter, especially city cars and not much of feedback. I personally hate that because it's too light, especially at high speed. It's like driving on a cheap game controller.
Having said that, the front tire width can also affect the steering stiffness. Wider tires have more contact area and hence need more force to steer.
So to answer your question, there is no single absolute answer. The question you ask should probably be is your Myvi steering behave the same as other Myvi of the same gen? AFAIK, gen 1 has hydraulic steering which feel heavier. Gen 2 and 3 have electric which has variable stiffness, but overall it's lighter than gen 1.
