I am using AVG free edition for normal web browsing + download site. Haven't encounter 'serious' problem so far. My friend told me THUMBSUP for Kaspersky but the only problem for him is insufficient memory sometimes.

AVG is an inadequate AV software. (Don't flame me, just telling from my experiences with a lot AV software)
F-Secure uses Kaspersky & BitDefender real-time scanning engine (yes 2 engines) so it's very secure, but resource hugging.
Kaspersky is one of the best, but also the one with biggest memory footprint (uses most RAM as compared to others)
Norton 360 has vastly improved as compared to previous Norton AV series. Footprint is much smaller, updates are more frequent and very reliable too, when compared to when it was Norton 2005/2006.
NOD32 from Eset is also the best, especially if you have little RAM to spare, best for gamers and graphic designers/video editors.

There has been flaming war between NOD32 and Kaspersky fanboys, but my humble advice is, use Kaspersky if you have a generous amount of RAM (say 2GB with good proc), else still with NOD32 (512~1GB RAM).

Just my 2 cents.

IMHO for a free Antivirus, Avast & AVG didn't do too bad against KAV, the difference is only 7%.

Not quite true. Imagine if AVG/Avast missed that 7% of that 174,770 virus. that's around 12,000+ of virus. doh.gif Think about it, then tell me if it is still "not bad".
I'm not using KAV btw, hate the huge footprint. Slows down explorer's seek/load time. Eset supporter. (Infinite trial period whistling.gif you know what i mean) laugh.gif

I get your point. But honestly speaking, how many of us actually paid for AV softwares (those that are not free, lah)? If you use pirated XP/Vista, then why bother using free AV when u can get paid-but-u-know-what-i-mean AV (which is better but also free) ? I'm not advocating piracy here, just my 2 cents.

If you want to use pirated AV then fine, but some people do want to be legit, some do use licensed Windows. And these free AV give them the choice to stay legit.

Funny thing is many clueless people still install pirated Norton because of hype and think AVG sucks because it's free. This list just prove that 'fact' is wrong and that's really what this thread is about.

If you want to educate people to use better pirated AV than Norton then more power to you. But if people want to know what free AV is good, I'll still say AVS, Avast & AVG.

Kapersky for XP and AVG for Vista and Norton for Mac. I got Norton for Mac free. All latest version but no beta for Kapersky. I used to use McAfee but 1 year ago and then the license expired so I decided to use Kapersky.

I use Bitdefender Internet Security v10 & NOD32. Always pays to be extra careful.

Tried Kaspersky Internet Security 6 before but it really is bothersome, especially when it rates all webpages such as gmail, CIMBclicks, Public Bank online, etc. as having unsafe certificated...but they are already certified by Verisign. Also, I don't like the fact that I can't use other programs that are "incompatible" with Kaspersky, especially when I need to be extra careful in my environment whereby there are lots of viruses, malwares, etc.

Kaspersky also seems to slow down the network. And it always block programs from accesing the web even when I already add them as safe. So many headaches and bothersome. But I must say, it is really awesome at detecting all those unwanted entities in the computer. Maybe it's just that I'm unlucky, but heck, 2 days into using the trial, I give up.

Same goes for Zone Alarm. That is one program that I'll never use again. Slows down the computer and network. It is really efficient in detecting virii and malwares, but I don't like my computing experience to degrade.

This proves that expensive and branded products does not necessarily mean they are better than cheaper and less well-known products. ask any ordinary non-tech savvy people out there, the only anti-virus softwares they know are Norton, PC-Cillin and McAfee. i told my fren abt NOD32, they asked wth is that shakehead.gif

sorry brother, i today maybe can't post out ur software, maybe tomolo.
if u can't wait, then u can download the latest version from kaspersky website 1st, then use it as trial version.
after u got the software from me, u just delete the trial version license key and replace with my ORIGINAL license keys.

I for one have some issues when someone tries to go and do a test and quotes openly that the detection rate has been at the expense of false positive.

In any good antivirus, they should have very few false positive as much as possible. Customers whom maintain computers rely on AV programs to tell them what is bad. if AV programs can sacrifice false positive for better detection rate, we don't need an antivirus, just mark all files as bad and we might just score 100% detection rate.

Remember that false positives can be destructive.....some of you may remember about a recent incident where Symantec flagged a critical file for Chinese based Windows. It was a fully legitimate file and it was not infected and the consequences was that, by deleting/quarantining that file, thousands of Chinese Language Windows computers could not start up because it was a critical file needed by Windows to startup. You don't want this happening more often.....
