Appbank posted the results of its yearly Fate/Grand Order user survey last Wednesday, which revealed that 20.6% of their 982 respondents spent over 200,000 yen (US$1,837) on micro-transactions in 2018.

This was the highest spending bracket and also the group with the highest representation overall, although the next largest group was those who spent no money on micro-transactions at all (13.3%). The largest amount of money spent by one respondent was 10 million yen (US$91,831).

The survey also tracked the largest amount of money the users spent to obtain a single character. 20.9% said that they spent over 50,000 yen (US$459), which was once again the highest spending bracket. The character who attracted the most money overall was Scáthach-Skaði, followed by BB in swimsuit form. Sadly, among those who reported spending big bucks on obtaining their favored character (colloquially called "whalers"), over a third admitted that they were unsuccessful.

The report noted that because the average amount of spending was so high, the surveyors will need to raise the figures in the choices for next year.

Aniplex released the Fate/Grand Order smartphone game in Japan in summer 2015. The game received an English release in the United States and Canada in June 2017. The series has spawned numerous animated projects, including an upcoming TV anime adaptation and two-part film project.

Although the game is free to play, Fate/Grand Order notoriously makes a lot of money through micro-transactions, earning an estimated 9 billion yen (US$82 million) in September 2018 alone. The game's estimated revenue for 2018 was 120.4 billion yen (US$1.1 billion).
