Going to Osaka, Kobe, Nara and Kyoto

1) is it good to rent a car to drive around. Not in Osaka but when going Kobe / Nara / Kyoto

2) is it advisable for driving within Kyoto

3) also it seems accommodation in Osaka is cheaper than Kyoto. Make sense to base myself at Osaka and travel to and fro?

Thanks in advance

You can put your base at Osaka and travel around, just need to take out some time for travel but it's not an issue at all. My last trip I stayed at my friend's house in Kobe and I travelled on daily basis out to Osaka/Kyoto/Nara.

Thanks for your reply. It’s very likely I’m not gonna drive this time. Few more questions if you don’t mind

1) I’ll be touching down at Kansai international airport. Any recommendation on the type of JR pass should I buy for value to go around the 4 places or is it not necessary? It will be for 7 days 6 nights

2) On the base to stay, my only worry on staying in Osaka is because the plan is to see the Kyoto autumn view including night scenes of the autumn. Worry about the transport back i guess

Guys, can please help to see if the below makes sense especially in the Kyoto Area (in terms of time needed and location proximity)

Day 1 (Stay in Osaka)

Reach Osaka in the morning 9AM

Drop luggage at hotel

Take train to Kobe and spend daytime

Take train back to Osaka for night time rest, dinner and go Shinsaibashi

Day 2 (Stay in Osaka)

Full day Osaka

Day 3 (Stay in Osaka)

Take train to Nara and spend daytime

Take train back to Osaka for night time rest, dinner and go Nipponbashi Den-Den Town

Day 4 (Stay in Osaka)

Take train to Kyoto for whole day (Keihan Line)

Tofuku-ji Temple > Fushimi Inari (up to Shin-ike Pond) > Tainai Meguri > Sannen-Zaka > Ninnen-Zaka > Maruyama-koean Park (Lunch in between)

Dinner and then to Southern Higashiyama Temple Illuminations - Shoren-In, China-in

Late train back to Osaka

Day 5 (Stay in Kyoto)

Check out and take train to Kyoto (Hankyu Line)

Drop of luggage at hotel before continue to Arashiyama - Tenryu-ji Temple > Bamboo Grove > Okochi- Sanso Villa > Kameyama-Koen Park

Day 7 (Last day in Kyoto - Flight at midnight)

Else which one make sense below?

2. Ryoanji Temple
3. Ninnaji Temple
4. Shugakuin Imperial Villa
5. Enkoji Temple
6. Kyoto and Sento Imperial Palace
7. Uji
8. Kurama/Kibune
9. Himeji Castle

If you're serious about going to Himeji, do it on day 1 in the morning and spend the arvo/evening in Kobe

Is there also a reason why you're shifting bases from Osaka to Kyoto on day 5 and not day 4 instead?
You're making 2 extra trips back to Osaka from Kyoto and back to Kyoto again which seems pointless.

You seem to have around 4 full days in Kyoto which is pretty good and you can split up the places according to area for a more relaxed pace.

1 day: Fushimi Inari, Tofukuji, Sanjusangendo, Uji etc.
1 day: Arashiyama area, Ninnaji, Ryoanji, Kinkakuji
1 day: Northern Higashiyama - Ginkakuji, PP etc.
1 day: Southern Higashiyama - Kiyomizu, Kodaiji etc.

Thanks for the feedback

Main reason is the accommodation is much cheaper in Osaka compare to Kyoto especially if we take 4 days doh.gif

I will be having Kobe beef at 黑毛和牛燒肉一 Kuroge Wagyu Yakiniku, Ichi Shinsaibashi Store. Osaka Amazing Pass has discount. biggrin.gif
I did have Kobe beef before at Kobe but my friend hasn't tried before, so found out this one not too bad and we will be staying nearby so convenient. biggrin.gif
