going to arashiyama on 5th Oct
planned to take the sagano scenic train from kameoka station arashiyama station instead(downward)

found out that period(1st oct to 7th oct) is a china national day holiday

want to ask, need to pre-purchase ticket for that particular train ride or able to purchase on site?
based on their website, seem like tickets of downward is more famous than upward
*
unless u plan for whole day in arashiyama, just go upward. finish visiting Arashiyama area 1st in the morning then hitch the train from arashiyama.
either way require u to walk to train station (the scenic train station <> normal station). it quite a long walk btw.

we din pre-purchase due to sold out (scalper i think) n other site selling overprice, we bought it on Kyoto station early. still managed to get good open-air car seat tho.

i don't plan whole day in arashiyama
my plan is actually to take JR from kyoto station to umahori station thn from scenic train from kameoka station to arashiyama station
after done with arashiyama thn take the bus from arashiyama to kinkakuji

but from their website, the downward is more famous than upward...the earliest 9.30AM train often labelled "X" which is sold out
because if need to pre-purchase, i might skip the scenic train completely because no time in my schedule to pick up
since i will be doing it on my 3rd day in JP and the office only opens from 10AM-6PM
*
u dont need to pre-purchase, u can buy it few day early or when u arrived at kyoto station. if there is no good time slot, just give it up.

be it upward or downward, whichever is fine. i choose upward since my plan to visit arashiyama early.

i did same trip like urs. Arashiyama > sagano scenic train then return n head to Kinkakuji by bus.

Huh... can scalp in Japan? Most of the tickets require names on the tickets. So unless Romantic train tickets doesn't require name when purchasing then there is a possibility.
*
tried to book early, but somehow all slot are taken. other site selling the tix, but kinda overprice (this make me think ppl are scalping)
we choose to buy em on the counter physically as they only limit amount tix for pre-purchase n left some for counter selling.

talking bout tix reselling, u know those cheap/discounted train/shinkansen tix they are selling at small kiosk/shop.
those are working ppl buying those tix, get receipt n claimed company, then they travel by cheap overnight bus instead. hmm.gif

but then perhaps they update the law n require names, tho last year i still see those type of shop still opening tho. unsure.gif

Hey everyone, I am going to Osaka in October. Still quite conflicted on which train to take from Kansai Airport (KIX) to Osaka.

There are 2 main choices now:
1) ICOCA/Haruka package costing = 4600yen round trip (inclusive of 2000yen ICOCA purchase)
2) Nankai Airport Express costing =  3840 yen = 1840 round trip (920 one way) + 2000yen ICOCA

Is there any reason to use ICOCA/Haruka package when Nankai Airport Express costs less? I am planning to use ICOCA to travel around Osaka (and USJ), Kyoto and Nara only.

Also, is RM 3,000 for expense enough in Osaka? Exclude accommodation and USJ ticket since they are already paid for before the trip.
*
Haruka is nice if u wan to go Kyoto fast from KIX.

RM3k? my basic rule for japan travel is RM300 per day, so can last 10 days.

Yeah, most likely I will. I Googled and it has schedule until September only, will see if it will be updated later.

Since this is my first time to Kyushu and based on RC's suggestion to buy JR Sanyo-San-in Northern Kyushu 7 Day Pass, so looks like I will cover only Northern area this round, does this schedule make any sense? We actually dislike dragging luggage around and changing hotel every 1-2 days once, need your advice and comment as we need to book our accommodation. Willing to let go some places but major ones like Fukuoka, Nagasaki and Beppu should be included?

Day 1: Osaka - Fukuoka
Day 2: Fukuoka - Nagasaki
Day 3: Nagasaki
Day 4: Nagasaki - Kumamoto - Mt. Aso (can skip this if we can't figure out the transportation as no intention to drive in Japan) - Beppu
Day 5: Beppu and Yufuin for Onsen.
Day 6: Beppu - Kitakyushu - Fukuoka
Day 7: Fukuoka - Kyoto

In addition to the above schedule advice, can somebody help me with these questions?
1) Can we travel straight from Nagasaki to Kumamoto using this JR Pass? Or no matter what I will need to go back to Hakata and travel from Hakata?

2) Can I travel back to Kyoto (Station) from Fukuoka using this JR pass? Or it has to be Osaka? Or cannot travel back to Kansai at all?

Thanks. notworthy.gif
*
i also have plan for northern Kyushu next year spring.
my plan somehow similar, tho not yet finalize.

it would go something like this,
Day 1: reach Fukuoka (evening)
Day 2: Fukuoka
Day 3: Nagasaki
Day 4: Nagasaki
Day 5: either return Fukuoka, then day trip to Kumamoto or Ferry to Kumamoto, luggage drop at locker, then retire the night at Fukuoka
Day 6: daytrip Oita, Beppu/Yufuin
Day 7: daytrip Kitakyushu
Day 8~final day: Fukuoka

Day 3-7 will be using JR 5days Kyushu Northern Pass.

Day 1-2, staying Fukuoka,
Day 3-4, Nagasaki
Day 5~, Fukuoka

so for ur question,
1) There is ferry from Nagasaki to Kumamoto, duration around 30min, costs around 1.1k yen.
2) Yes, but need transfer at Osaka or Okayama ( according to this https://www.japan-guide.com/e/e4802.html?aFROM=2158_2161 )

Thanks for sharing yours, it gives me some idea. So am I right to say you will only stay at Fukuoka and Nagasaki? The reason why I think of putting two nights in Beppu is for onsen only.

1) Appreciate it. Apparently there's a train that runs from Nagasaki to Kumamoto via Tosu https://www.tripadvisor.com.my/ShowTopic-g2...ure_Kyushu.html, then I can utilize the JR pass.

2) For the JR pass I'm getting covers Nozomi I think: https://www.westjr.co.jp/global/en/ticket/ssnk/ and based on your link it goes directly to Kyoto Station. If any transfer is also fine with us.
*
same reason as u, dun like dragging luggage around. n also i like my trip to be flexible, if day 5 Kumamoto is raining, i can swap it with Beppu/Kitakyuhsu
Ryokan seem nice but sked not in our budget.

1) i haven't compare the route, hence just remind myself there is ferry there.
2) wow, i din know tat JR passes cover Nozomi. most JR passes dun cover Nozomi.

Yeah, I'm surprised to see it covers Nozomi. laugh.gif

Anyway, if I want to book Shinkansen rides with JR Pass, I can only do it in the JR centre right? Looks like gotta spend some time there when we are in Osaka. Prefer to reserve seats and hope to get seats in Hello Kitty Shinkansen. Is there any way I can book Shinkansen rides online? Last time when I travelled from Tokyo to Osaka, I just bought the ticket separately in Shinjuku as I didn't buy any JR Pass that time. tongue.gif
*
tat pass seem ok for reserved seat. n yea, u can do it on JR centre.
1st time i went to claim my JR pass, i do it while reserving my shinkansen seat with it together.
u can claim ur JR pass n reserved ur seat early even if the day u claim ur JR pass is not active on the day u claim it. as long as ur shinkansen travel is within ur JR pass active duration.

*
1. never been to narita
2. with ur previous budget listing, yes, skip kansai. with 1 yo infant, hard to recommend.
3. with ur previous budget listing, yes skip those, too expensive n 1 yo infant too young to enjoy the ride.

I think it's not real ryokan, one of the authentic ones costs RM 2k/night (the one we wanted tongue.gif), the rest cheaper around 1k per night is fine with us but shared bathroom which I don't like. So chose this instead, has private bathroom and onsen.
*
RM600 ryokan with private onsen? thats cheap.

Hope I will not give up visiting Japan again.
I kinda regret to issued ticket for 12 days. maybe 7 days is enough if Tokyo alone. is 12 days in tokyo kinda boring?
*

For me 12 days for Tokyo is a lot, my last trip few years ago I split 12 days for Tokyo + Kansai.
This round will be Kansai + Kyushu for 14 days.
Maybe I need to rephrase, not the natural onsen, just hot tub I think but at least it's ours and not sharing with anyone. But the onsen outside is very near to hotel, so can drop by if we want.
*
Last time go 14days tokyo + kansai, kansai is very fun, tokyo is kinda bored me. regret putting 5 days only at kansai. ended up went to unplanned Nikko day trip from tokyo.
Last year autumn foliage go kansai, 13 Days. feel not enough but Osaka is kinda bored me out even tho we used it as travelling hub to Himeji n Kobe. Kyoto is fun tho.

mind share why u say kansai is very fun? eg which part and what activity? Wanna learn some knowledge currently planning trip to kansai, some said osaka 2 days enough some said need 3 days. I have 10 days to spend
*
depend on wat u really like. i like nature n temple, so kyoto fit in well.
-Arashiyama + Tenryuji (especially autumn time the hill n temple garden is beautiful). place like Jojakkoji is among my fav. n b4 u say nething, i usually went there around 7am. so i never had a chance to see overcrowded Togetsukyo Bridge.
-Kuramayama +Kifune jinja + Kuramadera. did a morning hike around it. also visit at night during night illumination. the train passing the momiji tunnel is nice too.
-Amanohashidate. nice place, not as much tourist compare to Kyoto center.
-Uji. Byodoin n the surrounding area. again not as crowded as ppl tend to go Nara.
-Fushimi Inari. again, both time i went, its either 7am or 7pm. so got no chance to see the heavy crowd.
-Himeji- the golden ginko during autumn is nice. along the side when u walk from station to Himeji castle.
-Arima onsen, din explore much as trying to catch up last ride to Mt Rokko., wish to spend more time there, seem like nice place to relax.

3k to cover osaka, kyoto, Tokyo, Kawaguchigo possible for 12 days? use tokyo subway pass and kyoto bus pass. I am with my wife so hotel cost can be shared.
*
hotel in japan are usually count perhead, not by flat room rate.
tokyo subway pass is kinda limited. i only manage to use the 24hr once only. depend on itinerary, maybe u can fully ultilize 72hr one, but not my my trip tho.
if ur budget is limited, its best to scrap kansai n kawaguchigo. its expensive just to travel there n back.

found a English Source to you

After its introduction at Haneda airport, the system will then be deployed at Narita airport on Aug. 27, at Kansai International Airport on Sept. 25, and later at Fukuoka Airport on Oct. 8, Chubu and New Chitose airports in November and at Naha Airport next July.
*
source say leave japan only. u enter macam still need go thru immigration personel when masuk.
u enter, immigration will stick the QR code sticker on ur passport + stamp validity. n then when u leave, u go thru automation, n scan the QR code (or no more QR code, just fingerprint/face recognition)

unless i miss something from the article. (just browse thru quickly) icon_rolleyes.gif

Future will be like our Malaysia Passport fast track computer scanner.
Just slot in Passport and scan fingerprint...then u are Pass.
NO more stamping Cop.

In or Out Japan will be same like our Malaysia computerize system.
Super fast and efficiency

Malaysia one only for Malaysian, while Japan will be open for all people. Japanese + Foreigners. One Step ahead.
Since computerise, entry Japan form will no longer needed. So future no need bring pens and write on aircraft.

i think human still needed.

Yeah, leaving the country only. Form still needs to be filled in.

what's the point of going japan if just stroll around hotel and Tokyo area? Tokyo subway per 3 days 2000 yen already. nothing much in Tokyo.
my fav place khaosan world namba osaka. Less than 75 ringgit per night. twin room 150 ringgit. good location
*
stayed Khaosan at Kyoto. u pay wat u get.
they have this rules, u take a piece of "bed sheet" u lay on the bed. ur body touches that, n dump it at the bin after ur stay (check out). no towel provided. thin wall.
not sure its apply to all branch.

n if u spend 2k yen on subway in 3 days, ur doin it wrong. tat y i find it hard to utilize 24/48/72hr subway pass. kinda restricting but the best u can save isnt much.
