By the way, my JR Pass runs out 1 day before I leave Tokyo (stupid planning I know) so now need to decide where to stay for the last 2 nights in Tokyo and how to get to Narita.
I think I took the Keisei Narita Access Limited the last time I was staying at Asakusa and it took me around 1 hour but the train was packed full of people for the latter half of the journey.
As you can imagine, not the best idea with 2 large suitcases and a couple of small ones.

Wondering if it's worth it to pay double ad take the Skyliner for the comfort and convenience or are there other alternatives?

How about the Airport Limousine buses?
Hi. Would you suggest the suica or passmo passes instead for pay per use instead of the subway pass? Since we may not be able to fully utilize the unlimited 1-2-3 days passes?
*
Yes did cross my mind but I am not sure about the traffic on a weekday morning between 7am-8am.
I've heard from some people that they were caught in a bad jam and almost missed their flight blink.gif

As for the subway pass, yes just get a PASMO or SUICA as they are much cost effective.

I used to take 7am bus from tokyo station and traffic are not too bad. As its just about a KM away to the highway. If you are taking the bus in hotels around Shinjuku/Shibuya/Ropponggi, there will be a bit of traffic to get to the highway which is normally smooth.
Besides traffic, they are also quite strict with the number of luggage you bring on board. Limousine bus allows two suitcases though they can be a bit lenient if you have smaller ones. THere is another bus that goes from tokyo station/ginza to Narita that cost 1000yen. They allow only one luggage to be kept under the bus. I do take them often and I have seen them not allowing people to board with two big luggage.
*
The cheaper bus version, is it called the Keisei Expressway bus?

my parent option last time is stay a night near Narita Airport. morning took a cab to the airport.
not sure which hotel tho.

i learn from their mistake, hence i choose Haneda flight instead.
they cant help traffic jam as well. i face late bus b4, upto hours. delaying my journey n trip. 1pm bus, 2+pm  only came. 30 minutes ride become more than an hour.
i go out early from my destination n walk instead, its faster as well.
*
Have 2 nights to burn so staying near Narita Airport seems like a waste to me haha!
So troublesome having to fly out from Narita.

Yes but normallly I use Access NArita which is park right in front of Tokyo Station, Yaesu Exit.

Waliuuu, is a JR Pass worth it with your itinerary? First galnce tells me no but you can check below for a rough estimate:

https://www.japan-guide.com/railpass/

Or use Hyperdia to get a more accurate figure.

He mentioned that he is giving Tokyo a miss in his last post, hence my question to him.

Hi! I'm planning to visit Tokyo-Osaka-Kyoto around late October for 7 days. If I want to spend 3 days in Osaka, 1 day in Kyoto and last 3 days in Tokyo should I get the rm1k JR pass? or are there any cheaper alternative way to move between these 3 cities?
*
Are you doing a round trip from Tokyo back to Tokyo or flying into Tokyo and leaving from Osaka?
If it's the former a 7 day JR Pass might pay off, if the latter it doesn't pay off.

The cheaper alternative is to just use your IC pass (SUICA/PASMO/ICOCA) within those 3 cities itself and buy a one way shinkansen ticket.

Hi friends, I will be going to Osaka -> Kyoto -> Tokyo this coming mid November for 17 days. I have been doing some homework over the internet reading reviews and etc but could not decide where to best stay in Osaka and Kyoto. Do you mind to help me recommend some hotels or area to focus on? I read "Minami" in Osaka is a good place to stay due its proximity to Dotonbori and other shopping/nightlife scenes. I am also planning to visit Nara while I am in Osaka but I have some doubts as I'm not too sure if these areas suggested are convenient for me to travel to Nara via Train/Mrt.

Not forgetting, I will be bringing my family with me, a total of 4 of us, all adults.

Tentative
Osaka (5 days 4 nights) 1 night will be wasted as I will reaching at around 9.20pm.
Kyoto (3 days 2 nights)
Tokyo (9 days 8 nights) Plan to travel to either Hakone or Chureito Temple for a day. Which is better?

Thanks all for your advises in advance!
*
17 days is a nice amount of time and I think you can definitely spend some amount of those visiting other areas by smart usage of a 7 days JR pass.
I personally feel that you are short changing Kyoto (especially during autumn) so cut out maybe a day each from Osaka/Tokyo and add that to the Kyoto portion.

I have never been to Hakone but I love Chureito, you can easily spend a couple of days at Fuji 5 Lakes which puts you near the pagoda.
Worthwhile to get up early and go to Chureito in the morning and hike up to catch a glimpse of Fuji on a clear day

Nara can be accessed from Kyoto or Osaka easily so no fuss there.

Places I recommend as day trips with your JR pass from Osaka:
1. Himeji & Kobe
2. Okayama & Kurashiki

Places I recommend as day trips with your JR pass from Tokyo:
1. Nikko

If you're wanting an onsen experience, go to Kinosaki Onsen and spend a night there. Easily accessible with your JR pass from either Osaka/Kyoto.

As for accomodation areas, stay around the Namba area in Osaka or near the Midosuji subway line.
For Kyoto, stay at Kyoto Station if you're making frequent day trips or stay near the Shijo/Kawaramachi area for easy access to Gion/Higashiyama etc.

Like I said, 17 days is good amount and with a bit of detailed planning, you might even be able to go to Hiroshima & Kanazawa if you're up for it.

The last Airbnb I stayed at Kawaguchiko last Nov did not require us to produce our passports during check-in. Not sure if it has changed this year or not.

The whole world prefer Thailand than Malaysia. Alot Western still thinking above Singapore are Thailand, direct skip Malaysia.
Malaysia alcohol tax just too high compare to Thailand.

Many foreigners don't even know Malaysia existed before the famous disappearance of MH and the 1MDB case...
I remember back during uni days in Melbourne, this French guy came up to me and asked where I was from.
Told him Malaysia and he never heard of it.
Told him we are just north of Singapore and he went "oh, I thought north of Singapore was Thailand?" sweat.gif

Depends on where you are going. There is a subway pass for unlimited use for 24 hours, 48 Hours and 72 Hours for travel around Tokyo subways. If you don't travel a lot, getting a suica/passmo would be adequate.
You meant the 5th Floor of Haneda is the floor with the outdoor observatory where you can watch the airplanes? Anyway, I really salute you guys who can spend overnight at an airport.  biggrin.gif I really need a proper bed to get some shuteyes, so if I stay overnight at an airport, I will be a zombie tomorrow.

I still cant accept the onsen bathing culture, even after trying so many times. I really loathe going in a bathroom with naked men all around.  sweat.gif Any ways to overcome this anxiety? The only onsen I have tried was a private one in a hotel near Takayama.

Just think to yourself, "whatever you have, they have it too so no big deal" tongue.gif

Entered. With the hope that there is nobody inside. Tried during dinner hours, or late at night. Result, I slammed the door once I see people inside.  sweat.gif
No gay please.  sad.gif
If its a women onsen then I would have no problem. brows.gif
I think I might have nightmares seeing naked men sitting on the little stool and using the bucket to pour water over their heads.  rclxub.gif

Actually when you enter an onsen, just focus on where you're heading to (the shower, the pool etc) and don't let your eyes dart around.
Once you hit the pools, close your eyes and relax.

I think if you do that, less chances of you spotting a naked person unless someone jumps out in front of you laugh.gif

When you onsen so much, you will reach this level.

I'd say it's the weakening of Malaysian currency recently. Not just Japanese yen, it's also high for the other rates. If your trip isn't due yet, wait it out biggrin.gif optionally buy a bit and keep to average out (any) potential losses.
*
Probably Yen is getting stronger as the AUD is also getting weaker against it for the past few months vmad.gif

yeah understand...still looking...planning for 2 nights in kyoto and 4 nights in osaka...wonder will be able to catch autumn since I'm going 24oct. Hopefully can catch.
*
Generally speaking, 24th Oct is too early for koyo in either areas.
You might need to head up to higher elevations for that.

There is actually a lot of ground to cover if you are considering to cover these two areas in two days. Unless you are renting a car, I don't think you would be able to do do this by public transport alone.
But but but... you mentioned that if we use our Suica/Pasmo at outskirts, people will know we are from Tokyo/Osaka. So must have both IC and Suica/Pasmo?  tongue.gif
*
I have both PASMO & ICOCA laugh.gif

Hi thanks,
My flight arriving at 08.45am in KIX, so should be able to purchase right?

I am torn between:

1) JR West Kansai Area Pass (4 days ¥6500)
- from what I understand, I can use this pass from airport to board 'Haruka' train to Namba, which i think is very convenient. I read that JR also has quite a wide network station so it will be much easier for first timer like me, and it covers some Rapid line too (not sure what tis is)

2) Kansai Thru Pass (3 days ¥5200)
- this pass looks like it covers most of the rail line in Osaka, except for JR line. However it only cover for 3 days and I do not want to fork extra for another day pass. Will this pass can be use to & from KIX too? Or i will need to board other train to Namba?
*
If you're only gonna spend time in Kyoto, Osaka & Nara then no pass pays off for you.
Just use your IC card will suffice.
