Windows Phone is officially obsolete, Microsoft tells users to switch to Android or iOS
18 JANUARY 2019

Yes, you did read that correctly – Microsoft has officially set a sunset date for Windows Phone. In a Microsoft support page titled “Windows 10 Mobile End of Support: FAQ” some questions are answered regarding the eventual drop of support for the Windows Phone platform.

Under “What should Windows 10 Mobile customers do now?” Microsoft recommends that Windows Phone users “move to a supported Android or iOS device." Windows Phone devices will no longer receive security on December 10 of this year. Though third party apps may continue supporting Windows Apps, Microsoft will no longer support the platform.

Microsoft’s mission statement to empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more, compels us to support our Mobile apps on those platforms.

Devices that are on Windows 10 Mobile version 1709 will receive security support patches until December 10 while the Lumia 640 and 640 XL on version 1703 will only last through June 11.

Microsoft advises those who still have a Windows smartphone to manually create a backup using the built-in tool before the sunset date. After that, the tool will be phased out. To perform an update head to Settings > Update & Security > Backup > More Options > Back up now.

As for Cortana, Microsoft has positioned the voice assistant not as a competitor to Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant, but rather to compliment the platforms. Check out the Source link below to see the full FAQ support page.

Cortana needs to be that skill for anybody who’s a Microsoft365 subscriber. You should be able to use it on Google Assistant [and] Alexa, just like how you use our apps on Android and iOS so that’s at least how we want to think about where it’ll go. – Satya Nadella, Microsoft CEO

Are any of our readers still rocking a Windows device? Let us know which device you have and tell us which phone you might be looking at down the road.

Though I never owned a Windows Phone, the early days of Pocket PC first sparked my interest in smartphones and I read so many reviews in Laptop Magazine in my high school years (Yeah, I’m kind of young). I don’t know that I’d be writing this right now if it wasn’t for the platform. Thanks, Microsoft!

Huge windows phone fans back then. If there’s one with good battery life remaining I’ll buy it in a heartbeat. Doubt it will be collector item though.

Yeah, same here. I thought the interface was refreshing back then compared to iOS and Android. Had a Lumia 525, 735 and also the 1020. In the end the lack of apps and support for apps was a deal breaker.

The end of support date has been known for a long time. Phone won't drop dead on end of this year. I'm still rocking a 4-years old Lumia that is running Windows 10 Mobile. Bought a spare battery from Lazada, so I'm good for now.

New Lumia 930, 950, etc still being sold through Lazada too.

I had an Asus 565P and HTC Diamond, which were my first smart phones before turning to the dark side with iPhone 4 laugh.gif

After that I’ve tried Lumia 525, 735 and 1020 but to be honest none of them had the adequate battery life for me, despite having better power management than Android phones.

App support is crucial for survival. They realised that too little too late.

Meanwhile, as a Windows Phone/Blackberry 10 ex-user, I just ditched my Android for a Lumia 830. It should arrive next week, I'm strangely excited for a phone that's losing support in 7 months lol.

Good luck with your purchase and don't worry man, Windows mobile devices will carry on working after this December. I'm still using a 4-years old Lumia 735 on a daily basis.

And Lumia 830 may have lost support (i.e. monthly OS security updates) already, not sure. Anyway, there's a hack to get on the most recent version of Windows 10 Mobile, which is 15254.566 (as of May 2019).

Currently using my Lumia 950XL. Also adopted a Samsung S8+ from my sister which is pretty banged up on the screen. Mostly use the latter for essential apps only.

Gonna shift to a Nokia Android One phone soon, but see how it goes. No hurry here.

had a 950XL (apps started to stop working), moved on to Mi 9. If you guys loves functions from WP, you can install MS Launcher. I basically disable all Mi & Google stuff, contacts/calendar are sync from outlook.com, changes asistant to Cortana, maps to here maps, browser to Edge & MS Swift keyboard.

Now cortana is working like before, onedrive camera auto upload & all MS offices apps sync. The only google services you need is Backup (whatsapp/line/wechat, settings) to google drive & playstore.

Noticed that for mine to, but Whatsapp is still working fine for me for now. Gonna just relegate it to photo-taking, Whatsapp and calls in the near future.

Might migrate my Whatsapp messages over to a Nokia Android One phone when that time comes (still pondering on this as the steps to do so and to pay for Winwazzapmigrator for something like this). Still miss the function where pictures and videos can be viewed in the former without saving it into my phone's storage. I read that this problem is not confined to Android only but also iPhone as well.

I tried going to winwazzapmigrator way, but unfortunately my OS is too updated wpinternals doesnt work for me. the message.db file needs to be from the phone which is not encrypted, so you need to unlock the bootloader or maybe root it or access using mass storage. End up i just email all the chat archive.

For me WeChat, Instagram has stop working, not sure about FB didnt turn on the phone since 30th June 2019. After further testing Mi9 takes clearer picture than 950xl now, fast focus & AI to make picture looks nicer. The only part its weak at is low light picture, probably need gcam mod for it.

I see. Thanks for the heads up.

Looks like I'll just start Whatsapp with a clean slate on that hand-me-down S8+ first. laugh.gif

Then when I do get a new Android phone, then I'll migrate those over to it. thumbsup.gif

As for the camera, yeah, I'm noticing that pictures taken on the newer phones tend to look better on its screen, but not sure how good it actually is once you transfer it over to the PC/TV to view them.

Now just pondering if I should get a Nokia 7 Plus or an 8.1 as I'm not interested in getting a high-spec phone for the time being. Or maybe should I just wait until Nokia actually releases an Android phone with OIS equivalent to the high-end Lumia phones? hmm.gif

Not sure if Nokia could come out anything similar to Lumia days, the software optimization are what makes the Lumia line camera shines. Even with only 1 lens it could do so much more than those phone with 2-6 lens... imagine SD855 & a dedicated chip on Lumia 1020 with 1 lens, probably could fight with p30 pro if it was still updated till today.

Well, they managed to get back their 'Pureview' branding. Not sure if they managed to get back most of the team behind the camera magic, though, but it seems like they're moving towards reclaiming that by adding OIS into the Nokia 8.1.

Hopefully they'll introduce a Pureview 808 and Lumia 1020 equivalent into their next iteration. The Nokia 9 Pureview was quite a turn-off to me. What with 6-lens and all. Still don't get the need for 2 or more lens on the latest Android flagship these days, though. Haven't been following the mobile scene in a very long time, but I always viewed it as some marketing gimmick.

Was really hoping that Windows Phone will continue kicking ass, but sad that its support will end after this year. Not surprised, though, as support for it is gradually reducing over the past year.
