RPM and the associated gear ratio is only half the picture. It’s how much fuel you need to maintain that RPM on a flat road that is the important part of the equation. A diesel by design also has lower rpm. None of it matters if
1. The engine is very happily turning at that speed
2. Nvh is low
3. Fuel is being burned at a low rate
