It depends on your AV receiver and your preference on where you want your audio to output to

If your TV has optical out, you can connect your PS4 to your TV HDMI port as usual and then use the TV optical out to output audio to your AV receiver

If you output the PS4 audio from your TV speaker, just HDMI from PS4 to TV will do

About the audio quality, I have tried both optical and HDMI before, and they are acceptable to me, probably if you want to go with High Res audio like Dolby TrueHD or DTS HD-MA, then HDMI it is, again it boils down to the capability of your AV receiver
