Was there for about 1 week, but, that was 4-5 years ago...not sure my info is still valid.
Basically, the "happening" place will be at "The Bund", split by Han River (I think, cannot remember much the river name).
One side is more of traditional, old building preserve, another side is more of modern building. U can cross over either side fairly easy, fare is rather cheap. Alternative, u can take cruise to along the river.
Then, there is one place, cannot remember the name, I think it call People Square, or what.....more like Bukit Bintang area in KL. U can do shopping and sight-seeing there. But, beware of scammer there, they will try to be friendly with u, pretending want to learn English, want to talk to foreigner. Then, they will invite u to some dodgy cafe, so call to get to know u better, then, then, u would need to pay till the roof for the drinks, else u will be surrounded and can't get out. This is especially if you are male, they will use pretty girl to bait u. Sometime, they even more direct, ask u want to engage escort service or not. If you female, they will tell u they will bring u to factory outlets or shops that sell cheap designer bags or stuff. But, same modus operandi.
There is "Hop On Hop Off" bus also, I found it very good, they circle around the city, stop at numerous tourist place. U just bought ticket for a day. They got package it together with cruise. That's good option if u want free and easy, self tour.
Other than that, the city is huge, and everywhere is full of people. Last time, credit card is not widely accepted, only certain tourist place accept credit card. Ringgit is not available in foreign exchange either. Now, I don't know. Maybe had changed.
