Connection at the moment :

Phone line connected to Modem DSL
LAN 1 (Modem) connected to WAN plug on this router
All other settings are correct (Currently running Asus Router)

Issue is:
Despite correct username password, it does not want to communicate with the modem. Error message was "Please make sure modem connected to WAN or contact ISP"

Ald talk to Huawei support. they ask me to talk to UNIFI

Talk to UNIFI, UNIFI says as long as high MBPS... it will support

Did you try connecting into other WAN ports in the modem?
Well, did you do any research if it supports unifi and hypptv? If other router works with the modem, this should be fine too. If it doesnt then maybe it doesnt support unifi. Try double confirming with Huawei if it supports UniFi.

Cheers biggrin.gif

Sorted. The Q2 does not have dedicated VLAN tagging and thus I had to reorganise the port on the unifi modem. Now the unifi modem is directly plugged into Hypptv while I've reassigned another port for the Internet connection. House is now fully meshed networked.

Mind to share how to configure the unifi modem?
Thinking of using mesh WiFi as well. Tplink Deco series supports vlan tagging but does not have enough ports. So need to move the hypptv connection modem.

Thanks in advance.

No, not really. There is way for units to work for both internet and hypptv.
Units like tp-link deco or asus lyra , can be solved by a simple smart switch. I will share the setup in my blog. Since it has only one outgoing port, just use the deco as normal router.

Attached Image

https://ahot.home.blog/

You can use it as reference to see the use of VLAN tagging feature.

The setup is tested working.
Attached Image Attached Image

Port 1 - In from BTU
Port 2 - to router
Port 3 - From router back to switch
Port 4 - go to LAN of our house
Port 5 - Directly connect to Hypptv box

I use Asus Lyra. Tp-link Deco is having the same limitation. It has 1 outgoing port. This setup also effectively makes all routers to become Unifi Replacement router with more available LAN port. So, all the china made router like huawei WS5200 can be use as unifi router.

I know some people may say that TP-Link TL-SG105E Easy Smart Switch also has similar function. But sadly, I tested it, I don't recommend it.

Thanks for the information. Can consider this option if cannot reconfigure the modem/btu. No additional hardware required if modem/btu is reconfigured so that hypptv connects via modem instead of router. Any idea?

It is a bit risky to change BTU's config. If you do something wrong, you will have to call TM. RM53 is likely to be charged into your bill.

if you are using same model and same brand of equipments, i.e. Netgear GS105E + Lyra or deco, it will definitely work. Please state the model of switch you use.

Since you are using Huawei Q2 ( i don't have Q2, cannot show you the settings). Pls make sure you dail pppoe inside the Q2 settings correctly. This is the only place you can go wrong.

I can do mine with any china router. mine is Honor Pro 2. Honor is under Huawei company. (A quad core 1.4Ghz CPU router @RM230 including post, manalah dapat cari...lol.gif , its spec can be read inside https://detail.tmall.com/item.htm?id=584167...=4113159030517)

Seeing is believing.

You can even further use different switch as what I have done in my blog

My q2 cannot connect to the unifi modem directly to establish the pppoe connection. Can you advice how you do it?

Now I still have to connect the huawei we on the lab ports behind the unifi router that connects to unified modem

Hi Mhwee,

Mind to ask you that you mention not recommend for TPLINK (TL-SG105E), Any reason for this? because this is quite valuable if able to work for small network, because the router should have some more LAN port still able to connect to normal PC device right?

Thanks

I'm using TP-Link SG108E which is SG105E with 8 ports. Unifi VLAN tagging, web UI, port mirroring, IGMP snooping, all worth very low price. More advance VLAN management eg VLAN trunking is very confusing but for basic Unifi it's ok.

Hi, If you are asking about the set up in :-

https://ahot.home.blog/2019/01/05/make-any-...router-as-well/

on why TP-link (TL-SG105E) cannot replace Netgear GS105E in the same setup, my answer would be "not recommended"

It is because i do have 2 units of tp-link TL-SG105E. Despite my repeat test, both TL-SG105E show the same problem.
I don't believe it is due to the 2 new units i bought having manufacturing defects. I believe it is the switch or firmware issue.

They will sometime malfunction in VLAN tagging. You have to restart the switch to get everything back to normal. This will happen after you leave the switch "on" for long time (like few days), then you try to turn on your hypptv, you will find out that you hypptv has no signal. After a restart, everything back to normal.

This won't happen to TP-link other much advanced switch, like TP-LINK (T1500G-8T)/(TL-SG2008) JETSTREAM SMART SWITCH.

in my blog, there is a topic on this tp-link switch, very good, durable, stable and powerful.

TP-Link SG108E is same like SG105E to me. Cheap thing with problem. I tested its VLAN splitting in front of router, it has problem. Don't tell me that the unit only malfunction when i do vlan tagging, but good to be used as normal switch.

I have 1 unit of this. Tested and gave up. I am now using it as normal switch.

thanks for explain, another question.
After follow the guide of doing the vlan on the switch, do we still need to connect lan cable from router output port( usually got 4) to the switch port 3-7 in order for the rest port 3-7 have internet connection?
or just port 2 to router( router setup the PPPOE connection succesfully) then the port 3-7 automatically have the internet connection and will auto assign IP (DHCP) same domain from router? and mean that I will have 4ports out from router and 5 ports out from switch to connect to any PC/AP/TV&etc.

Never experienced that with mine. BTW mine is TL-SG108E (latest firmware). Bought it for Unifi VLAN tagging & port mirroring my Internet traffic to a Raspberry Pi (network summaries etc).

Guess I'm lucky with the switch then?

Master mhwee,

I read thru your blog about the setting.
Regarding the Asus Router& Netgear Switch setup and TPLink switch&other router setup, I saw there is a little different which is Netgear need connect 2 LAN port, LAN2&4 from Asus router to Switch and tagged to port 8, but for the TPLink setup only show 1 line from router LAN(from the figure) , but physically never mention there need connect from router LAN to TPlink Switch port3-7(all untagged).

And my previous question if TPlink Switch, port 1 from BTU, port 2 to Router, Port 3-7 is for other device(PC,AP),Port 8 is for Trunk to 2nd Switch. So... *Port 3-7 required 1 cable from router Lan port?
I have the Huawei Honor router PRO gaming version just like yours. So I really interested for your setting to get rid the TM router. Your Huawei Router connection to the TPLink switch have how many cable exactly? confused.gif confused.gif

I take this post as reference. https://ahot.home.blog/2019/03/04/tm-unifi-...any-router-1-2/

1. Yes, you need to connect a lan cable from your router output LAN port back to the switch (port 3) in order for the rest of the switch ports (port 4 to 7) to have internet. Port 8 will have Hypptv independent from router because you split the VLAN 600 before the router.

If you connect 1 of the router LAN port back to port 3 of the switch, and follow the my switch settings, Yes, 4 ports of router and and 5 ports of switch are having same network, 1 dhcp from router. You can use that for AP, PC, gadgets, NAS etc.

2. If you are using Unifi certified router, there is no point to use the switch. It is because the work of splitting is done at router, and the router usually will assign one of its output LAN for IPTV ( that's hypptv).

3. If u never connect one of the router LAN port back to port 3 (in my example blog post), port 4 to 7 of the switch will have no internet connection at all.

4. The main reason of my posts are, to use any router that does not have VLAN support. The VLAN is split at the switch level in front.
