Hong Kong media reports that Stephen Chow currently is filming King of Comedy 2 in mainland China. According to sources familiar with the matter, Stephen Chow’s The Mermaid 2 was previously set to release during 2019 Chinese New Year.

However, as the post production of the film is taking much longer than expected, the director decided to make King of Comedy 2 for the Chinese new year season.

King of Comedy 2 is a sequel to Stephen Chow’s 1999 comedy film King of Comedy. The sequel stars Wang Baoqiang, who also played major roles in this year’s box office hits Detective Chinatown 2 and The Island.

I'm a malay and I could easily tell whether that person is speaking mandarin, cantonese or hokkien.

At least all the punchline and few of the word we could understand and guess a bit.

Also, mandarin language is too eloquent to serve Stephen Chow's comedy any justice.. Cantones is a more coarse language, just like Stephen Chow's comedy. His comedy only works in Cantonese.

Nowadays they have toned down the foul languages, which made it less funny. He used to throw words like ham ka chan, lei lou mou, and all sorts like nobody's business. Sometimes when you try too hard in a comedy it backfires. Just keep it simple and straightforward.

The golden age of HK movies dies long ago liao. In the past, comedy was an open zone u can make fun of anything and everything, ppl arent so easily triggered cuz its a bloody joke. Making fun of mainland China ppl is a staples of HK comedy and its a no no now.

HK movies now need to placate China who cant take any joke aim at them. Easily triggered bunch, its unfortunate that they have the money but not the mentality to match.

This movie gonna b the same as every other modern HK movies, just slapping on a name of a successful movie/actor aint gonna means its an automatic success.

His last still watchable and still funny movie was Shaolin Football.

Kung-fu Hustle was still good because most of the actors and actresses were still from HK.

After that, he concentrated on being a director and making movies for China's market.

The "mo lei tau" essence of his movies are lost when it is made in mandarin.

The jokes just not funny anymore and he concentrated too much on special effects.

The worst part is his movies are still huge box office hit in China.

His movie started to lose the Stephen chow funniness was when he started to use CGI.

CGI was not the major problem. Both Kungfu Hustle & Shaolin Soccer have lots of CGI. The main problem is the supporting casts. The actors from China & Taiwan are just not as good as the Hong Kong actors when it comes to comedy.

No one can replace Ng Man Tatt. The chemistry he had with Steven Chow cannot be recreated by anyone else. If you notice all the good comedies from Steven Chow in the 80's and 90's, he was always supported by superb comedy actors too like Lo Kar Ying, Sandra Ng, etc.

If it is not Lo Kar Ying who sings Only You, I don't think it will be funny any more. That scene in jail is a classic unforgettable by anyone who watch it before.

This scene is classic. He didn't even bother to cut off some of the non edited scene.... Just keep on shooting. My favourite.

Its more than that. Post 90s entertainment is more competititve .. whether its HK movies or cantopop. audience are exposed to more choices. using the same old formula (in acting or song composition) just won't cut it... actors and singers will age.. and their role must and should change.

Even if Stephen Chow replicate his formula in his prime years all the way to year 2000++ onwards ... it's not a recipe for repeated success since audience and their tastes/options had changed.

We non Chinese familiar with Cantonese since decades ago due to old Chinese series early 90s long long ago in tv2 and tv3. Some of the words,we non speaker surprisingly understand. True story

I think most of us prefer cantonese rather than mandarin because most of the earlier chinese movie used cantonese like Jackie Chan/Jet Li/HK TVB era (HK film dominate more than China film) and we get used to it. As u said, chinese banana because our parents sent us to SK school and most of us learnt chinese through tv drama/movie which mostly in cantonese rather in mandarin last time.

I am a banana and found Wondering Earth a very good sci-fi movie comparable to lots of Hollywood production because it retained a universal value that everyone can understand. Some of the action movies such as wolf warrior and operation Red Sea were pretty good too because action movies main selling point are action. The main problem is comedy now. Lots of HK directors try to replicate HK style comedy for China market but to most non-China people, the jokes are just not funny anymore. It is basically lost in translation. The China comedy like Detective Chinatown series are tailored for China’s market and the comedy is lost to a lot of non-China people too. In order for China comedies to be successful worldwide, it needs to discover a formula that appeals to everyone and not China people only. However, China do not need to do it because their market is big enough but if they want to be a true superpower, they need to improve their soft power to a level at least comparable to South Korea. Look at Korean movies. Anyone who don’t speak Korean still find their movies entertaining.
