The Good:

The DVB-T2 signal in Kuala Lumpur metropolitan area is very strong.
Three transmitters are covering the whole city: Ulu Kali, KL Menara and Sungai Basi

All three transmitters are transmitting one MUX on the same frequency (UHF 666MHz) and form a Single Frequency Network (SFN)

Signal in Kuala Lumpur is strong to very strong overall. A good quality indoor antennas can do the job.

I condunct more than 5 signal test in Kuala Lumpur from June to July.

The most amazing test is the one that done in a budget hotel room without window and the room is in the middle of the corridor.

Antenna is Japanese brand MasPro UHF indoor antenna UDF2A

This test is done in another hotel in Sentral. The room has windows.

Hotel TVs receive satellite signal and the picture gone when there's heaving rain

I connect the TV to a DVB-T2 decoder and connected a cheap antenna to the decoder and get perfect reception

Signal is strong no matter how I position the antenna

BTW, the DTT standard being used in Malaysia is DVB-T2.

Countries using DVB-T2 includes: Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam etc

Newer TV sold in Malaysia should have DVB-T2 tuner built-in. If your TV doesn't have digital tv tuner built-in then you need to buy a decoder.

Get one from Singapore, Thailand or Vietnam is fine.

DVB-T2 transmission in Malaysia is run by a company called "MYTV" and they rebrand the system as "MYTV".

It's the same thing. It is DVB-T2 standard.

The bad thing is the colour often lack of details.

no matter how I adjust the picture, say, tune down CONTRAST and tune up BRIGHTNESS.

I still found "BLACK shadow“ on the screen often.

Here is a comparation:

Malaysia Digital Terrestrial TV HD... a piece of BLACK and lack of details, no matter how you adjust the picture.

Digital Terrestrial TV HD from another country. This is a normal picture and you can see details of darker parts:

For UHF DTT, I would suggest to use quality FLAT PANAL indoor antenna that comes with built-in booster.

When I conducted the reception test in the "No Window Hotel Room"... I tried 3 antennas, only the FLAT PANAL antenna with booster works.

The one that I used was a Japanese brand and it's available in Japan and Hong Kong since 2006.

12 years past and this type of antenna is still popular in the market.

It's not available in Malaysia but I can find similar type of antenna in Singapore.

The Singapore one I never used but the spec is quite similar to the Japanese one.

If you are in Malaysia, you should able to get the Singapore antenna easier.

Avoid others.

Can you see Genting or Menara KL from your house? The third site at Sg Besi is too far away.

Try to put the antenna a bit higher and play with the cabling a bit. I put my antenna just behind the TV and it's so sensitive that if the cable move a bit i lost signal haha...

erm, not really direct view, but my house to Genting is about 40+km, i don't think my house can direct see Kl tower unless i go to the taman near my house

If you don't have line of sight, the signal will be poor.
Then you need an outdoor Yagi or flat panel and experiment by pointing at the three transmitter sites for best signal.
The Selayang side of Batu Caves is in a bad signal area, especially Taman Raintree

By the way, the DVB-T2 decoder that I use in Malaysia, Vietnam

is Aconatic 357T2 which was purchased in Bangkok in 2015.

This decoder uses SONY chipset and sensitive to low signal.

The price is 890 baht (approx. 113 RM) , I remember I bought it in a sales offer, around 700 baht (88 RM)

The quality of this decoder is good since they use sensitive Sony chipset.

thanks what channels can you receive ?

In July, I could receive one MUX on 666MHz that has about 12 or 13 channels in it.
It included all analogue channels plus few others:

TV1, TV2, TV3, TV3 HD, RTM HD, NTV7, 8, 9, TV AlHijrah plus 2 or 3 others.

That lot was supposed to be spread across two MUX. The bitrate for each channel must be very low.

Actually not that bad, the modulation is QAM-256 in Kuala Lumpur, same as in Vietnam, so the total bandwith is high.

In Hanoi, there are more than 5 MUX and total channels around 160, but 2/3 of them are encrypted channels (pay services) and requires additional CI module installed to watch.

Among the 50 free-to-air digital channels in Hanoi, one MUX carries nine HD channels + few SD channels, you won't believe!
9 HD channels plus few SD channels squeeze into one MUX, you do see pixels when there's an action.

Here is another DTT reception testing:

Date: June 2018
Location: Midfields Condomimium (A room on 10/F facing north)
Details: LCD TV with only analogue tuner, DVB-T2 box, windows facing north, can see KL Menara.

For analogue channels, UHF signal 40km from Ulu Kali seems superior to the VHF signal from KL Menara.
The only exception is TV2 because TV2 from Ulu Kali transmitter is on VHF, the audio is in mono and the signal is poor.
Therefore, the KL Menara here is good for analogue TV2 only. It's also on VHF with better signal and in NICAM stereo.
To watch analogue TV2, get the VHF signal from KL Menara while get the rest of others from Uli Kali. It's weird.

Nice view and can see downtown

Two antennas here, the black (cheap one) connected to analogue TV, the blue one with booster connected to DVB-T2 box

Analogue TV Alhijrah from Ulu Kali (Perfect picture, line of sight reception)

Digital TV Alhijrah (SFN)

Again, lack of details in some darker area on DTT Malaysia. Not good at all.
I've tune down the CONTRAST and tune up the BRIGHTNESS and try to get better details in darker area
and all I got was a piece of "black shadow" ? MYTV should do something to improve the picture.

QAM-256 gives around 38 Mbps total payload. QAM-256 gives poor sensitivity and limits single frequency networks. The original plan was for two MUX, to allow QAM-64 with around 27 Mbps payload
