actually be it roaming or using china sim, both should be fine.

but depending on the top up method, if OTP is required, then you should not be using the china sim.

Just got back from Xiamen and Putian. I have successfully used the Meituan app to order the food.

The Meituan app allows international number to register for an account. However, to order the food, you can only input a local number for them to contact you. What I have done, which is pretty risky, was simply put a China number in there and make sure I am there when the food arrives or inform the rider through the in-app message to leave it at the lobby (designated food table).

TnG ewallet will charge additional 1% foreign transaction fee if you use it to make QR payments in China, isn't it?

How about using the dedicated Alipay app, and link it with debit card like Wise or GXBank? The exchange rate is the same, isn't it? As long don't exceed RMB 300 to avoid surcharges?
*
Anyone tried link Malaysia credit card (for instance Maybank) to Alipay? how is the rate? any additional charges on top of conversion rate?

If it's credit card, then very likely the bank (Malaysian bank) will charge you additional fees of at least 1-3%.

Suggest you use either Wise or GXBank instead. Both are considered debit card.

Yeah. My relative went to China for holiday many months ago, and he told me about this...
If you spend more than 200 CNY in a single transaction, Alipay will charge you 3%.
The same thing goes to WeChat Pay also.

As a workaround, if the transaction is more than 200 CNY (e.g. 600 CNY), just make the transaction multiple times of 200 CNY then.
Depends on what kind of merchant and whether they accept such way of payment or not, of course.

I think cant find official source when i tried. It was through our own experience that we hit this. Then it pops up across the internet when you googled for it.

The number you are looking at is 200 CNY.

In such situation, where you expect expense to exceed 200CNY in one bill
1) pay with credit card
2) pay with cash
3) order on separate phone, pay separately. This is of course only for restaurants that need payment before ordering. I did come across quite many though in my trip across shanghai /suzhou. But really depends on your luck

Didnt try split bill the entire trip.

i just came back from shanghai last week. Please download Alipay global version & Amap is a must app when you traveling in China.

Very convenient to use it when come to payment, public transportation & didi (aka grab) inside the mini program. Enjoy travelling as a free backpacker

you are a GEM!- I do not speak or read mandarin and this app is in English!!!

i just downloaded the ALIPAY app and link it to my WISE CARD.

any idea deduction of YUAN will be via WISE YUAN WALLET?

i will be going to CHANGSHA , zhanjiajie on free & easy mode
and intend to rely on didi for transportation.

Is it advisable to key in the passport no etc on the verification page?

Came back dy, happy to report that U mobile was absolutely flying in China.  Most place with full bar 4G+, which is already very ok for me.  And as we are using data roaming, no China's Great firewall block on FB and whatsapp etc.

At least for all the places in Yun Nan I visited. wink.gif

No speed drop, my package gives me 15GB international data roaming per month. For that 1 week in China both me and wife used up a total of 11GB.

Entire China are cashless lah. But China law, all merchant must accept cash. If you plan to pay using cash, don't pay any Gap more than 20 above.

Example you buy Cup noodle, 8.5 yuan inside Zhangjiajie maximum is 20 Yuan. If you pay 50 or 100, they won't have enough cash to pay you back.
