Hi,

also posted this in the Mikrotik thread, but maybe my question is better placed here.

I am using Time Broadband and would like to get rid of the fiber modem and instead use a SFP Module in my Mikrotik Router.
(That way I can save 1 power plug / 1 unit that consumes power)

I heard that it is possible but have to get Time Broadband Support to update the MAC address in their system...

Is it possible?
Anyone here who has already done this and can share a how-to?

I experience very bad ping to servers in Europe in the past 48 hours (since Saturday).

Here an example of 1 server that I monitor for reference reasons; usually the ping average is between 200-400ms, but especially this weekend it is 4000ms++

Anyone else experiencing the same?

TIME provided me Huawei HG8145V5.

Wonder if there anyway to record or know the bandwidth usage per month?
*
You also should have a router where all your devices connect to, correct?
In there you might have an option to check the monthly usage of all connected devices.

Yes, the same here and indeed started Saturday afternoon. Now it's almost impossible to reach some European sites during the afternoon....
Has anyone complained it to TIME?

Just wanted to add, it seems like the routing to servers in Europe is fine every day between 06h - 10h GMT+8 (Malaysia time)...

So just a very short period of actual good connection since Saturday.

I am monitoring the connection to 4 servers on a regular basis:

1) Hetzner dedicated server DE
2) IONOS cloud server DE
3) Oracle cloud server NL
4) Oracle cloud server US

All have similar patterns in connectivity over the past 3 days from Malaysia...

Europe <--> N.America has some spikes, but not as bad as from/to Asia.
Connectivity within Europe is fine.

I am pretty sure it is not an issue within responsibility of TimeBroadband. It is the routing overall thats somehow messed up or not working properly...

Wonder whats that about... where and why is this hiccup happening...

Having similar issues but I do think it might be a TIME routing issue as the problem can be solved by using a VPN, connection is then smooth.
*
VPN is not the solution... if at all a temporary one for some people, but not for all if you require to have direct connectivity to a specific server e.g. through that servers VPN wink.gif

I am still curious whats causing this bad connectivity at the moment... anyone an idea?

Agreed, its just the fact if a VPN can solve the connection issue, it helps pinpoint the issue towards more of a ISP (TIME) routing issue and less likely to be something locally in Europe.

Not having any luck with CS about this issue however.
*
Yeah... routing is messed up.
Since this morning it is again better, but I guess that is most likely just because of the public holiday here...? sad.gif

Here an updated monitor chart from the past days...

Interesting pattern is that it gets better each day from around 05:00AM and then goes bad again from around 10.15AM onwards (Malaysia Time, GMT+8)...

Hey bro & @saltykopi

FYI I have been following up with TIME CS from September 2020 already about their routing issue,

30+ email chains, but still haven't solved.

The culprit is their peer partner which is Telstra Network (From what I have discovered, in my case at least).

They are rerouting network unnecessarily instead of routing direct from point A to B.

Example : I want to connect from MY to Australia.

But what the routing did was MY - HK - Phillipines - Back to SG - Australia.

Which as a result create very high ping.

This issue happened starting around September 2021 I believe, before that was just fine.

Of course VPN works well, but who would want to pay for VPN when the ISP itself (TIME) should be able to give proper routing service.

Maybe if someone here working with TIME, please raise this issue, I as a TIME user feel cheated with this kind of routing service.

I'm really disappointed with TIME now.
*
I am using a program call "Open Visual Traceroute". You may find it on Github (github dot com/leolewis/openvisualtraceroute).

This shows routing is currently an absolute mess.

For example doing a traceroute to ionos.de (belonging to United Internet... so not small) you get major f*-ups in routing every other try:
1) going to Europe, then to the US, then back to Europe.
2) going to East Malaysia, Singapore, then US, then back to Malaysia, Singapore and then finally to Europe.

etc. etc.

You also more or less direct to Europe as well, but the majority of trys are like the bad ones above.

Same happens btw. with other ISP... e.g. mobile connections get routed similary...

So not sure if it is only TimeBroadband fault or something else is messed up.

The ultimate solution : report to MCMC
I already give up to tell them reroute China Telecom route (you want see how bad TIME to China Telecom? Well
MY - JP - US - CN , 200+ms , 400+ms for peak and 10%+ packet loss,  China Telecom uses NTT Japan from CN - JP - MY , so the problem either is TIME side or China Telecom side , but they should communicate and solve this issue)
And last time every night 100ms+ from TIME KUL to TM KUL with 10%+ packet loss
*
Yeah absolute mess, but it seems to get better since yesterday... lets hope...

Also, I see in your signature that you installed smokeping with public access - nice. thumbsup.gif
Just saw that the guys from linuxserver .io have a docker container of that in their fleet, will install that and tinker around.

I am using uptime-kuma (similar to uptime-robot, but free) for basic monitoring, but smokeping seems a bit better for longer periods.

Who TF is going to watch the Olympics??? Serioulsy? hmm.gif

Anyway, bad routing - it seems like routing to most IPs that are important to me are experiencing heavy package loss.

Using WinMTR and checking for a while here some examples of where the problems seem to appear:

- AS6453 Tata Comm. (major packet loss in Singapore & France)

- Twelve99 (major packet loss in UK)

- Zayo (major packet loss mainly in UK)

Surely not a complete picture of course, but it was not that bad a week ago... OR am I seeing this all wrong? unsure.gif

1 more question can my asus router AC1300UHP support 500mbps? If can i prefer to use asus router. Thanks
*
You will be fine with this router.
It is a Gigabit router, so it supports up to 1000 mbps - however, if you really get that depends on your connection and also number of connected clients.

WiFi (5ghz) might not even get to the 500mbps depending on line of sight; 2.4ghz might be better on distance but also max. mbps is lower than 5ghz.
Cable (Cat5e or 6) should get to the max pretty closely if your computer has a Gigabit ethernet card.

But again, you will most likely be fine.

Hi, I need some advice here.

I'm planning to get the rm99 package and use the voice basic - as I only receive phone calls. Question: I still need to buy a cordless phone, any brand you can recommend? And how do I set up the phone with Time internet?

Secondly, is the WiFI 6 Router worth the extra RM99 in the long run?
*
You can download an app to make and receive calls - no extra phone needed.
The app on iOS is "TIME Voice"; on Android for sure the same, but I dont have an Android phone.
Setup is pretty straight forward through the app, nothing special needed.

For Wifi 6 router... well it depends on what you require for your home network, but generally I would say it is not worth to spend an extra 99rm monthly.

Especially as you are asking on the long run: then it is usually more cost efficient buying a proper router.

Anyone knows whats going on with TIME connections to Europe?

I am monitoring different own and/or public servers with Smokeping and latest since January 2024 it got really bad.
There was also one earlier, but the latest network disruption in my area was on 13.01.2024... and it never got good again.

Connections within Malaysia or Asia are fine.
Just connections to Europe (and partly North-America) suck really bad.
Packet loss, bad latency etc. etc.

See below screenshots.
Anyone an idea?

u tested using wired connection directly to the wifi router that is connected to internet directly?

or u test using wireless?

what device u use? brand and model?
*
Wired connection only. Cable is CAT6, 50cm not bended not broken. - not wireless.
Mikrotik RB5009.

Again - connections within Malaysia/Asia are fine.

Seems like the routing to Europe is messed up.

Last time I had this issue was similar time of the year but 2021 and TIME fixed it pretty quickly after I opened up a complaint at MCMC.

Can you do a MTR trace route?

I've been complaining about the horrible TIME routing for months, their reply has been pretty standard blaming upstream provider and out of their control.

With that, I just can't recommend anyone to use TIME if you care about International routing. Other ISPs have better service quality these days.

I suspect there's something wrong with NTT cause whenever I notice high latency and packet loss, it's usually due to NTT. Not sure if the scenario is the same for you.
*
Sure can do.
Note that I run trace-route right at my routers interface that is connected to the ONT/ONU.

I am not having any contract anymore with TIME; so I am seriously considering switching within the next couple of weeks if this doesn't get substantially better.

As it is not the Malaysia network - maybe Maxis or Digi just have better routing? Or should I consider switching to a business plan?
