Hi everyone, I was planning to install Time at my condo last Saturday, but the installer advised against it due to my fibre optic signal being at 28 dBm, which is above the recommended threshold of 22 dBm or lower. As a result, the installation has been postponed until I can find a solution. The installer also mentioned he wasn’t sure why Celcom approved the signal reading initially.

Currently, I’m using Celcom Fibre and don’t experience many issues with downloads, gaming, or streaming. However, I do notice that streaming on apps like Sooka or RTM streaming can be choppy at night (while watching Olympic badminton, steaming Euro Cup etc). Could this be related to the fibre optic signal or just high user volumes during peak hours? Any solution on the Fibre optic side?

Yes, 28 dBm is really borderline. Acceptable ones will be between 18~20 dBm. At 28 dBm, you can face severe disruption anytime. What's interesting is that the TIME installer didn't bother fixing it? In most cases, the TIME installer can try to change the patch cord, access the MDF room and switch to another port? At least identify where is the root cause first.

Noob question , public IP better than private ?

Question is whether you need it or not? If don't need, it serves no benefit at all. It's like a roof rack that people put on top of their cars. If you need it, you need it. smile.gif

i suspect that this is why time 'quietly' implemented this i guess? becos if they publicly announce then more ppl may make the request to get back the public ip... i could not find any of such faq related to 600Mbps users will be getting CGNAT.. in fact i could not find anything related to CGNAT in anywhere of time broadband website, not even for 200Mbps too..

so obviously telcos are implementing this quietly, those who do not need it will not come back to them to complain... and they 'save' a lot of the public ip from here. if only 10 to 20% of the users reverted to them particularly those non-IT savy one... this implementation benefited time more obviously. i would think that 10 to 20% probably a reasonable nos... becos majority of the users in fact do not need public ip to serve the web etc...

and technically for home users, we are behind NAT is already a layer of security, with CGNAT, it will act like another layer of security to home users also... that can 'protect' those non-IT savy users even more? tongue.gif

Well, the likes of TM and also Maxis Fibre have already done it years back. Cost of IPv4 also going up oh. 2016, probably around USD10 per IPv4. Then it double up to USD20 in 2019. Today, it's hovering around USD60?

The Time SI should be able to at least prove to you that it is not their device problem, even though they are not able to fix it.

Like you said, you are able to get full speed when connected to the ONT. It simply tells you that the problem lies on the wall jack.
If your property is still under DLP, then you can report to management & usually it will be fixed FOC.
If not, then you may also report to your management and have them recommend a tech to come over to rectify, alternatively you can find yourself one.

Usually few possibilities, low quality cables, bad termination, low quality modular jack..etc.

If you are based in Penang, then our team wll be able to assist you.

Thanks.

Sounds like what most of us would do, but then again, if the developer provides you with a Cat5 LAN cable, it really isn't a defect per say, right? It's just a low grade cable but working 100%. If it's physically broken, there is absolutely no signal, then yes, it's a defect.

But if full speed on the ONT via direct LAN cable, then yeah, it's not TIME's problem. But TIME should definitely be able to explain it better, that they are able to remotely ping the LAN port of the ONT WiFi router and it shows 200Mbps. Hence, issue is from the ONT WiFi router to the customer's device, issue is somewhere in between.

Thanks for your response. I’d prefer not to redo the cabling as it’s a hassle. I’ll stick with Maxis but will sign up for a more affordable 24-month contract while keeping the same speed.

Actually, not necessary at all to do re-cabling. High probability can use back any existing cabling. It will depend on the setup done at the Fibre Distribution Point (FDP). This will be outside your home. Will PM you!

Dear sifus, im planning to sign up TIME and found out that i have an option to add on a mesh node with Huawei HG8145B7N, any idea if this is a good choice or I should purchase mesh myself, something like Deco X50 ? If i'm looking for a better coverage and perhaps a stable speed. FYI i'm currently using a TP Link EX511 EasyMesh router, with 500mbps plan i'm only getting like max 100mbps in my room. Thanks !
*
Have you signed up? How far is the router to your room? If not too far, and using a really solid router and mesh system, you should be able to get 500Mbps. If you're in a typical condo layout, less than 1,200 sqft, should be able to get. But if it's double storey terrace, then might be tough. But definitely more than 100Mbps on the TP-Link Deco X50.

Not yet signed up. My house is a condo with 900 sqft and my room is roughly 7 to 8 meter away from my router, perhaps self buying a mesh system will be better if comparing with the one provided by TIME?
*
Oh, sounds very good then. If 7~8 meters away and size only 900 sqft, with the Huawei WiFi 7 mesh (HG-8145), should be able to get at least 400Mbps++ direct from router! Don't think you actually need a mesh oh.

Any, PM-ed you.
