OK, results of my preliminary checking and testing will follow.
[attachmentid=10133748] My house layout. The red arrows indicate the current position of the Asus router and TPlink extender

this is the speedtest results in the living room on AC wifi with router setup:

this is the speedtest in the living room on AC wifi with Deco main node:

Next screenshot is the speedtest in master bedroom, BR1, furthest with AC extender on (original setup):

Got a bit of improvements over there.

Thanks.

thanks for the informative post!

For the speed to be good, I think the decos need to be in each other's line of sight ?

Line of sight would be better but not really practical, I think.

My second deco node is in my study room, behind one wall from the main deco node in my living room. About 6-8m between them.

my unit's layout is the long type with multiple walls in between my living room and master bedroom, really headache if want to find a good position for the node unit =/

Good morning!
Ya, most noticeably, surprising to me, was that in BR2 (middle bedroom) where previously on AC wifi I can only get 40-50 Mbps now I can get 150-200 Mbps. Very good.

I don't think they need to be in direct line of sight, but I believe whatever specs they carry would be more relevant to houses like in the west where they use sheet rock/plaster instead of steel-reinforced concrete. All that thickness and steel wreaks havoc. BUT I am getting decent coverage in BR1, my phone doesn't disconnect suddenly so it's good.

I think between 5-8m apart (if direct line of sight) would probably be the best. My unit doesn't have that, so even less than 4m also can see some degradation. I might add a single node in the future in the master bedroom but am happy now.

Oh. May need more than 2 mesh units for your long home but won’t know until you try.

My case tested wall penetration for a 2 x 9" concrete room wall still able to achieve 1xx--2xxMbps on 2nd node, riding on 1Gbps line on AP mode (default Dlink DIR882 is cabled to Main Node of Deco M9 Plus).

I believe even in my direct router mode setup I was able to reach 1xx-2xx on 2nd node nearest to my 2nd bedroom, although it dropped by half in my master bedroom. Still a vast improvement, but maybe I can try and repurpose the Asus RT1200G+ to try it in AP mode.

Can you use a Cat5e/Cat 6 cable connect directly from your Computer to the LAN port of your Router (TP-Link Archer C1200) & perform a speedtest, Please turn off your wireless.

Thanks.

Installed today. Tried speedtest, happy see 107 Mbps up, 105 down, 4 ms. Then noticed it was Malaysia server. Changed to California server - 62 up, 44 down and 206 ms haha

Also - note to anyone setting the SSID > Don't use special characters, like $ or ! or you will be i for a bad time sad.gif Last time Maxis' router can, this TP-Link one by TIME cannot.

Thats quite poor, considering the cost of a mesh router?

I was expecting the Deco M9 to hit at least 50% of the speed of the main node.

Bearing in mind that my original Asus RT1200G+ (which works well for many people I know) stutters and can't even reach my master bedroom without an extender, I admit it SEEMS the ROI is not good. But practical testing over the past 24 hours shows that coverage is CONSISTENT and dead zones are nil, which to me is more important than having a strong beam at 2-3 spots in the apartment.

My neighbors downstairs and in the block, also TIME users have invested in higher end routers with comparable results, so I'll chalk it up to our high congestion and building materials if you're in a residential apartment like me.

interesting I was planning to either buy the deco to setup the mesh network or manually pulling LAN cable, drill a hole and then setup an AP there... seems like the latter is the only choice I could go for to get high speed
p/s: currently using powerline but the performance is really bad sigh..

thanks for sharing ur setup and result rclxms.gif

Hi,

Yes for consistency, you need a wired connection if possible pull a Cat6 over.
For some houses, powerline is bit challenging & tuning and customization need to be done to achieve high speed.

Thanks.

Hope it helps!

If you can do the whole pull cable+install a strong AP that might be better. I have a total of 10 devices online most times and the Deco seems to be coping pretty well. Added bonus is I can shut down my kids' internet access with a click and see what apps they're using.

Can still go for a mesh wifi solution but connect the mesh nodes to each other using wired/LAN backhaul. Best of both worlds.

If I could easily cable my 2 deco units together, I would. Wireless backhaul is not preferred but it works well enough for me.
